Health Profession Programs at ONU

You don’t need to become a doctor to get involved in health care. That’s because careers in health care come in all shapes and sizes. In fact, the United States has 5 million people working in health care related positions that are distinct from medical doctors.

We’re talking more than 80 different professions representing about 60 percent of all health care providers in the U.S.

  • There’s more to pharmacists than you think. In addition to serving at your community pharmacy, they’re on the frontlines of every aspect of health care – helping to ensure better outcomes for people. Pharmacists are medication experts who enhance patient care and promote wellness. Pharmacists help people stay healthy and also manage illness or disease, with education, medications, prevention strategies and collaboration with other health care professionals. If you enjoy science and want to help people, consider becoming a pharmacist. As an ONU student pharmacist, you’ll engage in patient care starting your first semester and graduate into a career that has more than 100 different practice directions.

  • As an exercise physiology major, you’ll work toward a career that plays an important role in health care by establishing exercise, fitness, and rehabilitative prescriptions, standards and priorities. During your studies, you’ll combine rigorous coursework with intensive hands-on learning. You’ll study the basic and applied sciences, including physiology, anatomy, kinesiology, health and fitness, exercise, and diseases. At ONU, you’ll choose between two tracks: clinical and rehabilitation sciences or strength conditioning/human performance. Both will set you up perfectly for graduate school or direct entry into the healthcare workforce.

  • The psychology program at ONU prepares you for career-level and graduate-level work both inside and outside the health services field. Our program combines active learning, research involvement and practicum experiences to give you the tools to succeed. You will have the opportunity to design, execute and present your own unique research. Consider joining one of the faculty labs, an opportunity which often involves presenting at regional and national conferences. Practicum experiences have put our students in contact with a variety of projects, such as designing activities with preschoolers, observing assessments in schools and planning community events.

Behind the scenes, these medical investigators analyze blood, other body fluids, tissues and more to help diagnose and treat disease. Skilled medical laboratory scientists are in high demand across the U.S. As a medical laboratory science major, you’ll study biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and anatomy. You’ll spend a lot of time experimenting in sophisticated medical and science labs, too.

You’ll study science and health while getting a firm foundation in business principles. You’ll graduate with the unique ability to bridge two worlds – ready to help physicians, hospitals, biotech firms, pharmaceutical companies and more operate effectively. With this major at ONU, you’ll split your time between health science courses in the College of Arts & Sciences, pharmacy courses in the College of Pharmacy, and business courses in the College of Business Administration. You’ll choose from five areas of concentration: accounting, business analytics, management, marketing, and public relations.
