Cooperative education at ONU is more than just work experience. It empowers you to discover your purpose and make real changes in the field, all with the support of dedicated mentors who care deeply about your success.
Cooperative education (co-op) is:
● an academic program designed to integrate classroom studies with planned and supervised paid work experiences.
● open to all College of Engineering undergraduate students who want to work in semi-professional capacities in research, development, manufacturing, and engineering departments of industrial companies, consulting firms, and federal or state agencies.
● hands-on learning in a real-world setting that helps you build your resume and accelerate your career success.
The cooperative education program provides an opportunity to learn outside the classroom and experience a variety of engineering professions in a supportive environment. Your mentors at ONU and at the workplace empower you to navigate the challenges of professional life with confidence.
At Ohio Northern, no two students’ journeys are the same. That's why our optional co-op program empowers you to complete up to three rotations, allowing you to immerse yourself in career exploration for up to 12 months. You can take the time you need to find your niche in the engineering field while pursuing your bachelor’s degree.
The co-op experience transforms your future by increasing your marketability. Working alongside accomplished industry experts, you gain more than just technical skills — you develop the ability to adapt to a professional setting and solve real-world problems with an entrepreneurial mindset. All of this helps you stand out in the competitive job market after you graduate.

Both cooperative education programs and internships allow students to obtain professional experience and explore different career options. However, compared to internships, which typically last for a few months in the summer, co-ops are longer-term work engagements that provide more comprehensive mentorship and development.
If you choose to participate in the cooperative education program, you may complete your bachelor’s degree and graduate from Ohio Northern University in five years. This additional time for professional experience equips you with invaluable skills that employers seek in engineers. Our advisors and professors are here to support you every step of the way toward academic and career success.
