Justin Zollars: VITA volunteer

Most people dread tax season, but not Justin Zollars. An accounting and finance major from Mount Vernon, Ohio, he enjoys preparing tax returns for community members through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at Ohio Northern University’s Dicke College of Business Administration.

“I get a lot of internal satisfaction from helping people in this niche way,” he said. “It takes a lot off their plate because taxes can be so confusing and stressful.”

To Justin, taxes are like a complex number puzzle. While challenging to solve, it’s fun and rewarding when the pieces fall into place.

His interest in taxes, combined with his heart for service, motivated him to become a VITA volunteer. The program provides free tax return preparation for individuals and families making approximately $70,000 or less annually. Each year, ONU business students prepare between 200 to 250 returns, primarily for Ada residents and fellow students.

Volunteers must complete training to become IRS-certified for basic and intermediate tax returns. Through their service, they sharpen interpersonal skills and gain experience in identifying special credits that can significantly influence filing outcomes.

Last year, in addition to preparing tax returns, Justin assumed an administrative role by scheduling appointments and setting up events. This tax season, he has advanced to site coordinator, responsible for training volunteers, troubleshooting on-site questions, and reviewing every return for accuracy.

Justin credits his VITA experience with helping him land a tax position at GBQ, an accounting and advisory firm in Columbus, following his graduation in May.

“I’ve always been involved in community service, ever since I was little,” he said. “Giving back is important to me.”
