Enjoy this final friendship story—a perfect reminder of the bonds we’re thankful for at Ohio Northern University.
They found each other early in their journey at ONU, and these nine alumnae have never looked back. Nearly 40 years later, their friendship has “mellowed with age,” much like they have, but it’s still a profound source of joy.
When asked what her ONU friends have meant to her, Mariann Kocsis, BSPh ’92, replied: “That’s like asking someone what their index finger has meant to them!”
The group, which includes pharmacists, teachers, engineers, and an HR exec, bonded over rooming together, joining sororities (Alpha Xi Delta except for Mariann who joined Alpha Omicron Pi), and sharing countless dinners, study nights, and laughs.
They even started a human pyramid tradition. “We began doing that in Stambaugh Hall and continued to do it into our 50s. And honestly, if the conditions were right, we’d probably build one again,” laughed Deanna (Barber) Chappie, BA ’91.
The friends are loyal, funny, and independent. They’re not afraid to tell you what they think (sometimes even when you don’t ask).
“Our challenges and successes may look vastly different,” said Janet, “but we all value female friendship.”
Staying connected has always been a priority. Thanks to Janet—the “Queen of Organization”—they get together at least once a year, with past trips ranging from Costa Rica to a turkey shed converted into an Airbnb.
“I don’t take these ladies for granted,” said Janet. “I know that I have been absolutely blessed.”
Deanna says they all feel a debt of gratitude to ONU.
“We are fiercely proud of our alma mater and continue to proudly wear ONU garb to this day. It’s where we grew up. It was a beautiful backdrop to our many shared experiences.”
