2026 Lecturer - Dr. Carla Kim, BS ’97

Dr. Carla Kim, BS ’97, a renowned researcher in lung stem cells, is the Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) Professor of Pediatrics in the Field of Regenerative Medicine and Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School (HMS) will be presenting Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. at the Freed Center.
Her laboratory has pioneered the use of stem cell biology approaches to the study of adult lung progenitor cells and lung cancer. Her lab created three-dimensional co-culture organoid systems that allow visualization of the formation of airway- and alveolar-like structures from lung epithelial progenitor cells as well as new organoid culture methods to model the early stages of lung cancer. Dr. Kim also serves as the Director of Basic Science Career Development for the BCH Office of Faculty Development and the Director of Career Enhancement for Faculty in Science at HMS.

Named in honor of professor Terry D. Keiser, BSEd '64, the Keiser Distinguished Lectureship in Life Sciences brings nationally prominent life sciences scholars to Ohio Northern's campus each year to lecture and interact with students.

With an endowment of more than $1 million, the lectureship has been funded by gifts from alumni, friends and colleagues. Among the major gifts was a donation from Keiser's Northern classmates Robert Gronlund, BA '64, and his wife, DeOnne, of Lewisburg, Pa.

Keiser joined the Ohio Northern faculty in 1967, rising from instructor to professor of biological sciences to chair of the department. He served as the chair of the University Council and is the director of ONU's Metzger Nature Center. He was instrumental in establishing the Metzger Nature Center in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and the ONU Tidd-Oakes Farm, a 300-acre wetlands restoration project just 12 miles from campus.
