Ohio Northern University student Rylie Kocik set out to find a summer internship near her hometown of Cicero, New York. She wanted a position that would expose her to the many dimensions of the accounting profession.
She found exactly that—and more—at Saab, Inc.
Rylie, who is majoring in accounting with minors in marketing and management in the Dicke College of Business Administration, is interning this summer at Saab Inc.’s Syracuse, New York location. Saab, Inc., serves the U.S. government with advanced products, services, and solutions for military defense and civil security, offering Rylie the chance to apply what she’s learned in her ONU classes to a real-world, international operation.
“I love that I’m getting a diverse experience working in accounts receivable, accounts payable, general accounting, as well as tax and treasury,” she said.
In addition to performing hands-on accounting tasks, Rylie is gaining a broader understanding of corporate finance by collaborating with multiple departments and observing how a multinational organization manages complex financial operations.
“The biggest thing I’ve learned is to just take my time,” she explained. “Even with seemingly simple tasks like invoices and ship notices, there’s a lot of parts to the process. Attention to detail is important.”
Rylie is especially enjoying learning about foreign taxes. It’s the area of accounting she has always found most interesting.
“The coolest part of this internship is working with different cities and countries,” she said. “Saab is truly connected around the world.”
As she looks ahead to graduating in May 2026, Rylie feels confident her ONU education, paired with her real-world experience at Saab, has set her up for success.
“ONU has given me a great foundation on which to excel,” she said.
