Sept 25: Raymond F. Person, Jr. “Ancient Roots of the Anthropocene: Copper Production at Timna, Israel as an Ancient Sacrifice Zone,” 5 pm. in RE 122 (the pharmacy building)

This lecture is based on Person’s contribution to Emplacement: Engaging Nature, Culture, and Religion, a forthcoming memorial volume for Forrest Clingerman. Person begins with Clingerman’s discussion of “sacrifice zones” as emblematic of the Anthropocene (the topic of one of his last conference papers and a forthcoming posthumous publication) and argues that we can see the roots of the ideology of the Anthropocene in the ancient world, when we understand how the ancient copper mine in Timna can be understood as a “sacrifice zone.” Person is Professor of Religion at Ohio Northern University.
