Engineer's Workshop: Engineering Sustainability
Continuing Professional Development Workshop for Practicing Engineers (6 CPD's available, 2 of the 6 hours in Ethics)

Join us for an opportunity to explore the present and future of the transportation industry, where we are headed, and how we get there. Engineers are at the forefront of addressing the unique opportunities and challenges of an everchanging transportation landscape. Presenters will share expertise including:

Delivering the Promise of Self-Driving: Sterling Anderson, Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer of Aurora

Sterling Anderson is an expert in the creation, development, and launch of sector-defining products. In the late 2000s, Sterling developed MIT’s Intelligent Co-Pilot, paving the way for broad advances in cooperative control of human-machine systems. At McKinsey, he advised world-class companies on their product development strategy and practice. At Tesla, he led the design, development, and launch of the award-winning Model X, then led the team that delivered the first several generations of
Tesla Autopilot. In 2017, he co-founded Aurora, which he helped shepherd as a board member and the Chief Product Officer to become the world leading independent developer of autonomous vehicle solutions. In a conversation moderated by Dean J-D Yoder, Sterling will share the history, the opportunity, the technology, and the path to market of self-driving systems in ride-hailing, local
goods delivery, and trucking industries.

The Anatomy of an Airport: Augustine “Gus” Ubaldi, PE  M.ASCE

Gus is a licensed professional engineer with a career spanning 50 years in aviation, railroads and rail transit. He is an independent consultant serving as an expert witness on airports and railroads. He managed-owned an airside aviation design firm and served on the Ohio Aviation Association board for over 20 years. Gus holds a single-engine private pilot & license and volunteers with the Civil Air Patrol. Since 2009, he has been adjunct faculty at Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland, Ohio, in the Construction Engineering Technology program. In his presentation, Gus reveals how elements of an airport are selected, designed and constructed to serve the needs of unique aviation markets and communities. From the location of runways and identification of aircraft being served, to the impact of federal regulations and physical obstructions, he offers a complete look at the anatomy of an airport.

Visibility of Signs and Markings for Human and Machine Drivers: Dr. Fan Ye, PhD, Ohio Northern University

Dr. Fan Ye is currently serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Ohio Northern University (ONU), with over 20 years of experience in transportation engineering. Throughout her career, Dr. Ye has led and participated in more than 30 transportation engineering research projects in the U.S. and China. She holds a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University and is a licensed professional engineer. In her presentation she shares how traffic control devices, such as traffic signs and pavement markings, help support safe and efficient driving by both human drivers and machine drivers. This presentation will also cover what’s under the hood of human visibility and machine vision technology for signs and markings detection, which helps the audience to better understand human and machine’s visibility demands in the variability of real-world driving scenarios.

Mass Transportation and the Central Ohio Transportation Authority: Joanna Pinkerton, President and CEO, COTA
