At a glance: Engineering Education

Did you know?ONU's degree program in engineering education is the first of its kind in Ohio and one of the first in the nation

Why I chose Ohio first...

Engineering education majors are eligible for the Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program. Learn how Northern made this Choose Ohio First Scholar's choice an easy one... read more.

The engineering education program directly addresses the need to develop a new generation of high school students who can contribute to solving our nation’s challenges through engineering and innovation. The four-year engineering degree will prepare graduates to become licensed secondary math teachers but with a more specialized perspective than teachers who have a traditional education diploma. Visit the department's web site.

Degree offered

Engineering education majors earn a bachelors of science degree.

Distinctive features

  • All students enrolled in the program take core classes in general engineering and math education. Students may then specialize in a specific engineering discipline through the selection of four technical electives and a Senior Design Capstone Project.
  • It is fully anticipated that graduates will be able to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and pursue registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • A student who transfers to Engineering Education after one year in another engineering discipline will still be able to graduate in four years, with the possible addition of one or two classes, at most.

Facilities

The Robert W. Biggs Engineering Building houses the T.J. Smull College of Engineering.  Major features of the facility include:

  • Concrete testing laboratory
  • Circuits/electronics laboratory
  • Control systems laboratory
  • Digital electronics and microprocessors laboratory
  • Engineering material science laboratory
  • Finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics laboratory
  • Power systems laboratory
  • Thermal systems laboratory including two wind tunnels & jet engine facility
  • First-year engineering studio
  • Senior design studios

Student organizations

Professional organizations offer opportunities for leadership-building skills and participation in regional and national conferences.

  • American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)
  • American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
  • American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
  • Association of Computing Machinery (ACM)
  • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
  • Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
  • Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
  • Joint Engineering Council (JEC)
  • American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)
  • Northern Engineering Without Boundaries (NEWB)

Other organizations in the college include the following:

  • Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society
  • Upsilon Pi Epsilon computer science honor society
  • Phi Sigma Rho (social sorority for female engineering and computer science majors)

Career opportunities

The four-year engineering degree will prepare graduates to become licensed secondary math teachers with a specialized perspective geared toward engineering. Graduates may also pursue job opportunities in corporate sales, technical training and careers in science and technology museums. Graduates will also be able to seek out traditional engineering careers or go on to graduate school.
