Young Engineer of the Year

Sarah L. (McConnell) Rowland, BSCE ’06, P.E., has been named 2011 Young Engineer of the Year by the Toledo Society of Professional Engineers, Ohio chapter. She was honored at a luncheon on Monday, Feb. 21 and a dinner banquet on Thursday, Feb. 24.

The award is given to a young engineer who excels in educational and collegiate achievements, professional and technical society activities, civic and humanitarian activities, engineering achievements and professional engineering accomplishments.

A fourth generation engineer, Sarah was born and raised in Sylvania, Ohio, and attended Northview High School. There she was active in band, choir, theater, and National Honor Society.

In 2006, Sarah graduated from ONU with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. She began her college career as a mechanical engineering major; however after a summer internship with the City of Sylvania, she realized that civil engineering was the right fit. While attending ONU, Sarah was a member of Mortar Board, Tau Beta Pi, Omicron Delta Kappa, and served as the treasurer of Society of Women Engineers. A majority of her time, however, was spent with the American Society of Civil Engineers where she was an active member of the concrete canoe team and was chairman for the 2006 North Central Regional Conference hosted by ONU.

Prior to graduation, Sarah completed a summer internship at the Lucas County Engineers office. She later accepted a full time position with the county and currently works as a roadway design engineer for both county and township projects. Sarah recently passed the Professional Engineering exam and is proud to now have the PE initials following her name.

Sarah is currently a trustee for the Toledo chapter of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers and is active with the American Society of Civil Engineers, where she serves as practitioner advisor to ONU. In 2008 she was named the ASCE Toledo Section Young Engineer of the Year.

Sarah and her husband, Ben Rowland, BSCE ’06, reside in Sylvania with their son, Jacob and are excited to welcome a new baby in May. Ben and Sarah enjoy spending time with family and being outside as much as possible. Sarah is also active at McCord Road Christian Church.
