Risk Management and Insurance

EVERY BUSINESS VENTURE INVOLVES RISK. AND SUCCESS, OR FAILURE, OFTEN DEPENDS ON HOW EFFECTIVELY RISK IS ASSESSED AND MANAGED. AS A RISK MANAGEMENT AND INSURANCE MAJOR, YOU’LL GAIN EXPERTISE AT EVALUATING BUSINESS, ENVIRONMENTAL, LEGAL AND POLITICAL RISKS IN A CHANGING GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT AND RECOMMENDING EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MITIGATE THOSE RISKS.

NAVIGATE THE FUTURE

With this program, you’ll receive a solid foundation in all aspects of risk management – from loss and protection, to insurance regulation, to underwriting and claims adjusting. Professionals with these skills are in demand across a variety of industries.

Networking is key in business, and it’s key here. With our small class sizes, you’ll get to know your professors, and they will get to know you. In fact, you’ll be assigned a faculty advisor who will mentor you from day one until graduation. You’ll also interact with and learn from business leaders, entrepreneurs and ONU alumni who’ve forged amazing careers in many different industries.

Your risk management and insurance education will blend rigorous coursework with real-world learning. You’ll work with actual companies to solve problems using risk assessment and mitigation strategies and tactics, including the use of a very important tool: insurance. You’ll engage in an internship that provides on-the-job training. You’ll hone skills in leadership, teamwork, creativity and entrepreneurship.

Upon graduation, you’ll be ready for whatever the future holds, including jobs in fields such as risk management, insurance and insurance brokerage.

EXECUTIVE CLASSROOM

Imagine traveling to a big city and meeting with senior executives from top companies – as an undergraduate student! The Executive Classroom is a special course that focuses on leadership and ethics. The course’s cornerstone is a trip to a major metropolitan area for intense days of meetings, networking and cultural activities. Past classes have traveled to Chicago and visited the Chicago Bears, JP Morgan Chase, AT&T, Deloitte, On Target Performance Group, Harbor Capital Advisors and Cook County Hospital.

INTERNSHIPS

Your internship gives you a chance to work in the field and build your résumé. We set you up with an internship that matches your interests and career aspirations. While many students intern in Ohio, others choose to complete an internship in another state or even internationally. Most internships are paid, and many result in offers of full-time employment upon graduation.

ZAJI LIEBERMAN

THINK SUCCESS

ZAJI LIEBERMAN BSBA WITH A MAJOR IN RISK MANAGEMENT AND INSURANCE ’16

“I love helping people and businesses by making their future more secure. Risk management and insurance is a great major because the demand for young people to work in this industry is very high. The opportunities in this field, whether financial or personal, are endless.”

Zaji Lieberman majored in risk management and insurance because she wanted a challenging career in a recession-proof industry. At ONU, she joined the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, served on Student Senate, played lacrosse on ONU’s inaugural varsity women’s team, and was active in the Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM), even attending SAM conferences in Orlando; Washington, D.C.; and Las Vegas. She also completed an internship at Lockton in Kansas City, Mo., and had numerous opportunities to network with high-level industry executives. Today, she works at Hylant, a risk management and insurance brokerage in Dublin, Ohio.
