Manufacturing technology student thrives using tools and his imagination

Zachary Himes practically grew up in a race shop, spending hours as a child watching his dad build sprint car engines.

“That’s probably a big part of why I am where I am today,” he says. “I love being around metal and machinery and I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty.”

At ONU, this Findlay, Ohio native is majoring in manufacturing technology and minoring in business administration. Graduating in spring 2023, he already has a job lined up as a sales engineer for Allied Machine and Engineering in Dover, Ohio, a company where he interned.

Zach says manufacturing technology at ONU was a natural fit for him. He likes the “small town vibe” of ONU’s campus and the exceptional professors and technology equipment that ONU provides.

His major is hands on with abundant opportunities to build machinery and equipment using his imagination and the tools at hand. For his senior capstone project, he’s part of a team that’s building a robotic greenhouse. It’s a challenging project that has led to growth in knowledge and friendships.

“Spending countless hours on this project with my partners is probably one of my best memories yet,” he says.

Zach is also a member of the Student Advisory Board and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. His favorite group is Epsilon Pi Tau. He appreciates that his ONU professors pushed him to be the best he could be academically, which resulted in his membership in this international honors fraternity for technology.

As he looks toward the future, Zach is pleased with his choice of University and major.

“I am proud to be part of a tight-knit community and overall, just proud that I will soon be an alumni, but a Polar Bear forever,” he says.
