Trate DeVolld

Ohio Northern University pharmacy student Trate DeVolld recently received the 2020 Grossomanides Scholarship from the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Foundation. He is one of only 12 recipients to receive a national scholarship from the foundation this year.

DeVolld, a fifth-year pharmacy student, is a collegiate brother of the Gamma Delta Chapter of Kappa Psi at Ohio Northern, through which he has held executive leadership roles and served dozens of committee terms. He has been very active with the organization both locally and nationally, and he currently sits as the vice satrap of Kappa Psi’s Great Lakes Province, which encompasses all chapters of Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky. In summer 2021, he hopes to run for international office with the foundation.

Since beginning his journey at Ohio Northern in fall 2016, DeVolld has immersed himself in a variety of organizations and extracurriculars, such as Mortar Board, Student Societies of Health-System Pharmacy, and the National Community Pharmacy Association. For several of these organizations, he has held, or currently holds, an executive position.

Outside the classroom, he has worked as a clinical pharmacy intern for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, a pharmaceutical compounding teaching assistant, a peer mentor for the College of Pharmacy and is a member of the ONU men’s club volleyball team. In regard to community service, he has done medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic through the student humanitarian organization Northern Nursing Without Borders.

DeVolld’s impact on the ONU Raabe College of Pharmacy and the university as a whole is undeniable. He was instrumental in developing a leadership studies minor and helped write a paper on leadership preparedness in schools of pharmacy in the United States. He’s also worked on several research committees with ONU faculty. In fact, he credits his faculty mentor in part for his success and recognition in Kappa Psi.

“I would not have been recognized with this scholarship had it not been for my mentor, Dr. Natalie DiPietro Mager,” he says. “Her continuous dedication to our profession, college and student body is truly inspiring and makes me proud to attend such a distinguished university.”
