Scholarships and Student Aid

Scholarships are important to students! One of Ohio Northern University’s highest fundraising priorities is helping students access the excellent education and high impact learning practices that will set them apart in their careers and change their lives. On average 90 percent of ONU students receive some sort of financial support to offset the cost of attending college. This direct connection between donors and students is meaningful in helping students to realize their dreams. If you are considering making a gift to Ohio Northern, consider supporting students through an endowed scholarship or a contribution to the Northern Now Scholarship fund.

I want to help now.

When you make a gift to the Northern Now Scholarship, you are helping deserving students go further than they ever thought possible. This fund accepts gifts of all sizes and joins them with other gifts to make an even bigger impact on meeting urgent needs. Scholarships are available for immediate use, and students benefit from your commitment each year.

I want to help now and leave a legacy of support.

When you establish an endowed scholarship, you are making an investment in the future of ONU and generations of students. Your gifts are invested permanently, then the annual distributions are awarded as one or more scholarships. You may choose to support all students or those in a particular academic area, from a specific geographical area, or who are developing a talent for which you are passionate. In addition, you may choose to name the scholarship in honor of a loved one, a special individual, or a group such as your family. Because your endowed scholarship will be a permanent legacy, you may add gifts in the future and leave a gift through your will or estate. Endowed scholarship funds can be initiated with a restricted or unrestricted gift, pledge or bequest.

  • Scholarship awards are made for a full academic year and may be renewed annually on the basis of satisfactory progress toward graduation.
  • The recipient(s) of any scholarship award may also qualify for additional forms of financial assistance, institutional or otherwise.
  • Scholarship recipients are limited to Ohio Northern University students, including entering freshmen, who are deemed worthy of financial assistance as judged by appropriate college officials and who meet the preferred qualifications specified by you, when applicable.

How  we say 'thank you'

An annual scholarship appreciation event recognizes donors who have established endowed scholarship funds or have made a gift of $2,500 or more to the Northern Now Scholarship. To show their appreciation for the financial aid they received from donors, many Ohio Northern students attend the Scholarship event in the fall. This provides a great chance for ONU students to thank those individuals who help make their educations possible. It also can be especially gratifying for donors to meet the actual students who benefit from the scholarship they funded. We are so proud that so many students take advantage of this inspirational opportunity. Donors are recognized according to the criteria of all University recognition societies, including the Lehr Society, the Life Lehr Society, and the Heritage Society.

As a scholarship donor, we may ask you to share your story with the ONU community. Everyone has their own story about why they give, but they are all unique and inspiring. Donor stories frequently appear on the ONU website, in University publications and other materials.
