Cody Criss, BS ’16, is pursuing a DO/Ph.D. at Ohio University through a dual-degree program that combines medical school with doctoral research. His doctoral research will examine the neuroplasticity (brain changes) associated with ACL injuries. After graduation, he plans to pursue a residency in either general surgery or orthopedic surgery.

As a biochemistry major at ONU, Criss became engaged in research early on. He joined a group headed by Dr. Jake Zimmerman, associate professor of chemistry, conducting organic synthesis research. He even spent two summers at ONU working on research projects. “Because of the productivity and diligence of this group, we conducted several impactful studies that ultimately led to publication,” he says. Criss also took on leadership roles in Mortar Board, Student Senate and the Student Advisory Board.

According to Criss, his research experiences at ONU led to his acceptance in Ohio University’s DO/Ph.D. program. “I credit the faculty members in the chemistry department,” he says. “They are remarkable individuals who have a deep interest in the success of their students.”
