HPSS Awards and Scholarships
THE MARVIN V. ENGLISH FOUR-YEAR ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Marvin V. English Four-Year Achievement Award is awarded to one male and one female. They must be graduating seniors with scholastic achievement (GPA), leadership, service to the HPSS department and moral character. Marvin V. English, BSEd ’41, H of F ’73, ACIT ’83, Hon. D. ’96, is known to many ONU faithful as the creator of modern-day athletics at ONU. English was a professor of health and physical education and a department chair; he also served as a coach and athletic director. He was a loyal and distinguished member of the Ohio Northern faculty for 34 years.
THE GAYLE E. LAUTH MAJOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Gayle E. Lauth Major of the Year Award is given to one student from each major (athletic training, exercise physiology, sport management) with scholastic achievement (GPA), leadership, service to the HPSS department and moral character. Gayle E. Lauth, H of F ’94, served as a professor, coach and administrator in the HPSS department for more than 30 years. Her dedication to students is well documented.
THE CLYDE A. LAMB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The Clyde A. Lamb scholarship award is awarded to one male and one female HPSS major based on leadership, good moral character, contribution through athletics (including being an athlete on a team) and a support role to intercollegiate teams; intramurals could be a factor. Clyde A. Lamb organized the Department of Health and Physical Education at Ohio Northern University in 1929. He served as a coach, department chair and athletic director. Lamb continued to teach full-time until his death on April 30, 1969.
THE HELEN A. LUDWIG SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The Helen A. Ludwig Scholarship Award is determined by scholastic achievement, leadership and personal character. Two awards are given annually to HPSS majors (alternating between two female awards, and one male and one female recipient). Helen A. Ludwig, BSEd ’44, H of F ’89, Hon. D. ’89, was a professor in the physical education department from 1963-84 and is considered one of the developers of women’s athletics at Ohio Northern University. She also served as a coach, assistant athletic director and academic director of the physical education department.
THE JOSEPH S. UHL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The Joseph S. Uhl Memorial Scholarship Award was established in 1973 through a personal gift from Rosemary Mohler Uhl and family in memory of her husband, Joseph Uhl, BSEd ’33. The award is given annually to two HPSS majors (alternating between two male recipients, and one male and one female recipient) based on financial need, scholastic achievement and personal character.
