At ONU, you can learn to understand, speak, read and write Spanish. In addition to language skills, you’ll gain knowledge about the people, histories and customs of different Spanish speaking cultures. Spanish majors gain linguistic and cultural access to 21 Spanish speaking societies and Puerto Rico (where both Spanish and English are official languages), as well as Latino and Hispanic communities both in Ohio and nationwide.
A Spanish major will enhance your career opportunities and enhance your intercultural skills. We take pride in offering high-quality courses and in encouraging our students to combine a foreign language with their primary major/minor. Here is your opportunity to complete all of your foreign language coursework on time while completing a double major or dual degree to complement any other field.
Here, you won’t get lost in the crowd. You’ll be part of a close-knit family. You’ll enjoy small class sizes, comfortable learning settings and amazing friendships. Your dedicated professors will get to know you. They will guide you in your coursework, study abroad, and post-graduate or career preparations. They will become personally invested in your success.
Our small setting equals big opportunity. From joining Spanish conversation table sessions, enjoying cultural events coordinated by the Latino Students Union and Spanish Club, studying abroad in Spain and Latin American, participating in outreach activities, to assisting professors with research, or joining Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish Honorary Society), you’ll discover countless opportunities to expand your horizons and build your résumé.
Students can take a language placement test, if they are unsure of their language level. Our retroactive course credit policy allows students to start a major or minor at their language level and complete their degree more quickly.
Upon graduation, your future is ripe with possibility. Your degree in Spanish will be your ticket to exciting career options and culturally rich international experiences.
