One-on-One Tutoring Sessions

One-on-one tutoring sessions allow you to sit down with a trained peer tutor and receive feedback on your writing in a private setting. These 30-minute sessions aim to help you improve any aspect of your writing that you are concerned about and help to ensure that you are fully addressing the expectations of the assignment or genre you are writing. Your tutor's goal is not only to help you develop the current draft that you are working on, but also to help you understand the benefits of each suggestion so that you can keep improving your writing on your own in the future.

The Writing Center also offers specialized tutoring services for Law students and Engineering students. Follow the links to learn more about each of these services!

Scheduling Your Tutoring Session

Tutoring sessions are available from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Walk-ins are welcome without an appointment; however, these sessions will be based on the tutors' availability. Because the tutors are often busy, especially during the times of the semester when you are most likely to come in for assistance, we strongly recommend that you schedule appointments for tutoring sessions in advance.

You can now schedule your tutoring sessions using our online system. To use this system, you will need to create a Writing Center account here: Once you have created your account, you can log-in to the scheduling system and make your own Writing Center appointment any time by visiting: For step-by-step instructions that walk you through the process of scheduling your own one-on-one tutoring session, please review the document "Schedule Your Tutoring Session" at the bottom of this page.

You can call (419) 772-2186 during the Writing Center's office hours to schedule an appointment by phone. If you do not already have a Writing Center account, an office assistant will set one up for you. The Writing Center office is open Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You are also welcome to stop by the Writing Center, located in Heterick 209, to schedule an appointment for a tutoring session in person. If you do not already have a Writing Center account, an office assistant will help you create one and walk you through the online scheduling process.

Preparing for Your Appointment

When you come for a one-on-one tutoring session, please bring a print copy of your assignment sheet and/or rubric and at least one print copy of your draft-in-progress. If you haven't started drafting your essay, bring any materials that you think will help the tutor (and you!) understand your writing task. We encourage you to spend some time thinking about the specific questions or concerns that you have about your writing so that you can discuss them with your tutor during your tutoring session. Make sure to schedule your appointment well in advance of the due date so that you have time to revise your writing in response to the feedback that you receive.

What to Expect

  • Ask questions to help YOU revise your draft.
  • Show YOU how to use resources to develop your writing, including those that address citation, grammar, punctuation, and usage problems.
  • Make suggestions that can help YOU improve your writing.
  • NOT judge you or your writing. Your tutor will show you how to think critically about the choices you make in your writing, but the Writing Center is and always will be a judgment free zone!
