Art and Design
Four major programs including advertising design, art education, graphic design and studio arts offered in a professional and liberal arts environment which contributes to students' exposure to form, theory and practices.
Biological and Allied Health Sciences
The department provides a dynamic educational environment in which students learn, investigate, and apply knowledge in their chosen discipline. Majors include biology, clinical laboratory sciences, environmental and field biology, forensic biology and molecular biology.
Chemistry and Biochemistry
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers an interactive learning environment and is accredited by the American Chemical Society. Our dynamic faculty engage undergraduates in a broad range of top-level research within five disciplines: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic and physical.
Communication and Theatre Arts
Our communication programs include broadcast and electronic media, public relations, and professional and organizational communication. The theatre arts major emphasizes a liberal arts education combined with a professional program.
Education
The Teacher Education Program is designed to provide prospective teachers with the general education, subject area concentration, and professional education experiences that enable teacher education candidates to enter the profession of teaching with competency.
English
English offers students a rich and rewarding experience in reading and producing texts in a variety of media. The English department uniquely offers five distinct majors: Creative Writing, journalism, language arts education, literature and professional writing.
History, Politics and Justice
The department of History, Politics and Justice features majors in criminal justice, history, political science and social studies and minors in Asian studies, geography and public history/museum studies.
Human Performance and Sport Sciences
Human Performance and Sport Sciences offers the following areas of study: Athletic training, exercise physiology, health education, physical education and sports management.
Mathematics and Statistics
The Department of Mathematics is committed to introducing students to the concepts used in mathematics, to giving them experiences in the development and application of their critical and analytical reasoning skills.
Modern Languages
The study of a language different from one's own promotes communication with another culture on its own terms, through its peoples, literature, histories and experiences of itself as a part of humanity.
Music
ONU's Music Department offers a wide variety of programs including the Bachelor of Music in Performance or Music Education, the BA degree with a number of concentrations and the music minor. Our impressive collection of ensembles includes vocal and instrumental groups and ample opportunities to perform.
Nursing
As a discipline, professional nursing builds from a strong foundation in the humanities and sciences. Ohio Northern blends the science of nursing with liberal education courses to facilitate students' understanding of complex concepts, skills, and attitudes essential to the practice of professional nursing.
Philosophy and Religion
The department is non-secular and reflects a serious commitment to the academic study of philosophy and religion within the liberal arts tradition. Philosophy and Religion are traditional disciplines which continue to be of interest in a university because they address essential and universal human concerns.
Our students receive a strong, in-depth education in classical and modern physics. Majors are well prepared to pursue further education in graduate or professional programs, including medical physics, for teaching in high schools, or for positions in industry and government.
The small student-to-faculty ratio in our department ensures individualized attention for all or our students. Whether in the classroom or laboratory, the faculty are totally committed to encourage students to develop skills and experience for the real-world demands of the students' future careers.
