PLACEMENT
BY EXAMINATION
A baccalaureate degree seeking student may
request an examination in certain undergraduate courses in the current catalog
for which achievement of the course goals can be demonstrated by examination.
Such examination shall not be approved for courses which the student has
previously audited, completed or failed at this or another institution nor for
courses which are prerequisite to any course for which the student has earned
credit nor for courses for which the student has previously attempted credit by
examination unsuccessfully. These examinations can be for either 'Placement' or
'Credit’.
Placement:
Satisfies the appropriate graduation and/or prerequisite requirements of the
course(s) with NO hours earned towards graduation and placement is recorded as
'PL'.
Credit: Credit
hours are earned for the indicated course(s) and credit is recorded as 'XM'.
Permission for a special examination
requires formal application using a form obtained from the Registrar's Office.
The application must be approved by: (1) the students
academic advisor, (2) the academic dean of the student's college of
registration, and (3) the chairman of the department in which the course is
offered. An examiner will be assigned by the department chairman.
Payment of an 'administration fee' is
required in the controller's office prior to taking the examination. Required
placement examinations (Math and Foreign language) do not have an
'administration fee' for placement, but the 'administration fee' is charged for
credit.
After all required approvals have been
obtained, in the order required on the form, and appropriate fees paid, the
student shall arrange for the examination with the examiner as appointed by the
department chair. The examination must be approved, given, evaluated, and the
results reported to the Registrar's Office prior to the end of the 'W' period
of the quarter in which the examination is administered. The examination is to be evaluated as either
'S' (satisfactory) (C or better) or 'U' (unsatisfactory).
Only satisfactory evaluations are
recorded.
Results of special examinations do not
affect the students cumulative grade point average.
The 'Administration Fee' is not assessed
for required placement examinations (Foreign language and Mathematics) unless
credit is requested.
The 'Credit Hour Fee' is 50% of the
tuition charge per credit hour as charged to part-time students as listed in
the University catalog at the time of the payment of the fee and according to
the student's 'fee track'.
The 'Administration Fee' is applied to the
'Credit Hour Fee'.
One course, maximum of 5 hours, is not
assessed the 'Credit Hour Fee'.
Credit earned by examination after having
achieved senior (SR) or P5 status is NOT applicable towards graduation.
Placement (PL) can be changed to
credit (XM) up to the time of application for graduation.
A maximum total of forty-five (45) hours
of credit earned by Special examination, externally administered or ONU special
examination, can be recorded and applied towards a
baccalaureate degree or Doctor of Pharmacy.
