ONU is Tobacco Free

Ohio Northern University, committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors, hereby adopts the following tobacco-free campus policy. Such a policy benefits both tobacco users and non-tobacco users by protecting all faculty, staff, students, volunteers and campus visitors from exposure to second hand smoke and creating an environment that supports tobacco cessation.

Definitions

Tobacco Product: Any tobacco or tobacco-derived substance including but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipe tobacco, hooka tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, dipping tobacco, bidis, blunts, clove cigarettes, e-cigarettes or any other tobacco preparation, nicotine containing product or product intended to mimic tobacco products other than those approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration for the purpose of treating tobacco or nicotine dependence.


Tobacco-Free Campus Policy Statement

  1. Tobacco-Free Environment
    1. Effective August 17, 2015, Ohio Northern University will become a tobacco-free campus.
    2. The use of tobacco products is prohibited in all university facilities and vehicles regardless of location.
    3. The use of tobacco products is prohibited outdoors on all university property including parking lots.
    4. The sale of tobacco products is prohibited on all university property.
    5. The university will not advertise tobacco products on any university property, through university owned media or at any university event.
    6. Tobacco products may be used for the purpose of research. Any research project utilizing tobacco products must be approved by the faculty member’s Dean, the institutional review board (IRB) and the university provost.
    7. Nicotine products for the purpose of cessation are permitted.
    8. This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, contracted employees, volunteers and visitors.
  2. Tobacco Cessation
    1. The university supports faculty, staff and students who want to stop using tobacco and nicotine products.
    2. Tobacco cessation programs and support will be available to faculty, staff and students through the Student Health Center, ONU HealthWise and the university insurance provider.
  3. Communication
    1. Copies of this policy shall be distributed to all faculty, staff and students.
    2. Signs prohibiting the use of tobacco products shall be posted at the entrance of university buildings, in university vehicles and university parking lots as appropriate. Installation and maintenance of signage are the responsibility of the Physical Plant.
  4. Compliance
    1. The success of this policy will depend on the thoughtfulness, consideration and cooperation of tobacco users and non-tobacco users. All supervisors, faculty, staff and students share in the responsibility of adopting, adhering to and enforcing this policy.
      1. Concerns about tobacco product use should be addressed respectfully at the time of infraction when possible.
      2. Continued concerns should be referred to the appropriate department.
        1. For faculty, staff contracted employees and student workers concerns should be directed to the individual’s direct supervisor.
        2. For students, concerns should be directed to the office of student affairs, or residence life.
