Spring Break
A major part of the mission of Ohio Northern University’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity is the annual spring break trips that are offered to students.
Each year, approximately 100 ONU students, as well as several faculty and staff members, travel to three different locations to serve with a Habitat for Humanity affiliate for one week through the Collegiate Challenge program. The trips take place during Ohio Northern’s spring break, between winter and spring quarters, when classes are not in session.
Past spring break destinations have included Fayetteville, North Carolina; Macon, Georgia; Phillips County, Arkansas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Battle Creek, Michigan. ONU Habitat for Humanity has also been traveling to Jackson, Mississippi to serve with the Metro Jackson Habitat affiliate during spring break for more than 10 years.
While always a new and different experience, students who participate with ONU Habitat for Humanity’s spring break trips serve closely alongside one another, building homes for those in need, restoring and rehabilitating troubled communities, and providing other services for Habitat for Humanity International. Students also enjoy fellowship with one another while taking part in the Collegiate Challenge program. Fundraising and donations help to keep the cost of these trips low for student participants, though the experience of serving underprivileged communities alongside peers in a warm, caring environment is priceless.
