Due to a scheduling conflict the Black Rose men had to play their away game against Denison on Friday-the day before homecoming. As the play-off berths were already set, the result of this last official league game would only please the statisticians.
The men's team from Ada had some problems with the directions to Denison's pitch. With half the team showing up later then expected, the pre match preparations were more or less skipped for a more in-game warm up. As a result the second half saw a lot better play than the first half. All the good intentions were there, but a lack of concentration and sloppy ball handling took all the rhythm out of the game. With good interplay and some strong runs, the Roses still managed to run up a good score against a brave home team's defense. After eighty minutes the scoreboard listed eleven tries for ONU and zero for Denison. And for all you statisticians out there: six of those eleven tries were converted. |

The win, and with it the still unbeaten fall record, led to a festive atmosphere back on campus. All the arrangements that were made for next day's homecoming social were field tested by many helpful hands. Extra backup arrived in the morning to do the final pre-game checks.
With all this activity, and a heavy match the day before, it wasn't surprising to see a host of tired faces on the pitch come kick-off.
The ladies took the field first in a match against their alumni. After some deliberations the current team gave the alumni three players to make two even teams. With these three girls all being seniors, the match became a battle between steady experience and youthful exuberance. In the end the experience prevailed. The alumni scored six tries, the current team scored two. |

The men's game started with a scare for the current team. The old boys were played simple and smart rugby and capitalized on several mistakes by the young guys. In the first half two pass interceptions were ran back for easy tries. In the second half the students played with more poise and concentration. The alumni were not able to answer this shift in gears and eventually found themselves on the loosing end of the score. They did however come closer to beating the students than any team in the league. |
