James Ruef, JD, LLB ''61, was invested in 2001 as a Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Membership is considered one of the highest papal awards conferred upon clergy and laity alike. Monsignor Ruef is a pastor at Holy Name Roman Catholic Church in Columbus, OH. James L. Hoover, JD '69, has been appointed to the Ohio State Bar Association's Traffic Law Committee. He has also served on the OSBA's Council of Delegates and Board of Governors and has been a member of the Ohio Judicial Conference Court Technology Committee. (Ohio Northern Winter 2003 Issue)

John Tuthill, JD '72 BA 69 of St. Petersburg, Florida was honored at a military retirement ceremony July 13, 2002 in Jacksonville following 33 years of service to the U.S. Navy, Judge Advocate General's Corps. Tuthill received both his bachelor's degree in political science ('69) and his law degree from Ohio Northern University. He served as an attorney with the U.S. Navy for six years, working as a defense counsel and prosecutor and heading a legal command in Key West. He qualified in 1974 as a military judge and presided at court martial cases on special assignment, primarily aboard aircraft carriers. He also served as an instructor at the Naval Justice School, the Navy's law school, in Newport, R.I. He left active duty in 1978 and became a prosecutor with the state attorney's office in the Sixth Judicial Circuit of Florida for Pinellas and Pasco counties. He was a felony division director before becoming a private practice attorney in 1985.  Tuthill's awards include a meritorious service medal, a Navy commendation medal, a Navy achievement medal, a national defense service medal with bronze star, a Naval Reserve medal with 30-year gold device, a military outstanding volunteer service medal and an expert pistol marksman medal. He also received a Hugh Howell Award, the highest award presented by the Navy Judge Advocate General's office for military legal professionalism. Johnnie Louis Johnson, III, JD 70, was recently featured in Oct. 21, 2003  issue of the Washington, D.C. publication  The Federal Paper, article titled,“Not Your Usual Federalist”  p.14.  Johnson is senior trial attorney for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Washington, D.C. and president of the EEOC headquarters Local 2667 of the American Federation of Government Employees. Charles Ziegler, JD '72, Ziegler steps into the role of deputy chief counsel and parliamentarian for the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The staff veteran most recently served as senior investigations counsel for the committee's investigations and oversight arm. The Portmouth, Ohio, native began his career on Capitol Hill in 1976 as Republican counsel to the House Public Works and Transportation subcommittee on aviation. In 1981, Ziegler moved to the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries subcommittee on fisheries and wildlife, where he held the same post. He returned to the Public Works and Transportation Committee in 1983 to be counsel to the subcommittee on investigations and oversight. Ziegler went on to serve stints on the aviation subcommittee and the public buildings and economic development subcommittee, before being named counsel to the full committee in 1997. Two years later, Ziegler became counsel to the subcommittee on oversight, investigations and emergency management, and then in 2001, counsel to the subcommittee on railroads. Ziegler graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 1968 before attending ONU College of Law.(Roll Call, Section-Climbers, July 1, 2002)

Judge Douglas J. Bennett, JD '75, now retired will be running in November for appellate court judge for the 4th District Court of Appeals in Ohio. He has served the citizens of Athens County as Judge since January 1, 1985. Bennett is a past president of the Athens County Bar Association and is a past trustee of the Association of Municipal and County Judges of Ohio and recently became the newest member of the Retired Judges Committee of the Ohio Judicial Conference. He is also a member of the ONU College of Law Alumni Board of Directors.

Susan J. Insley, JD ’76 (The Washington Center extra – Spring/Summer 2002 -  STATE INITIATIVES OHIO  p. 5) “ Insley Recognized as Founding member of the Ohio Steering Committee” by Caroline Lotoux  - Susan Insley, executive vice president of Cochran Public Relations, is stepping down after five years of valuable service.  Susan Insley, founding member of the Ohio Steering Committee, has played an integral role in the success of 500 Ohio college students who have attended The Washington Center’s internship program since 1997, Insley is a long time member of Ohio Northern University’s board of trustees and has served on numerous civic boards in the Columbus area.  The Washington Center is grateful for Insley’s many contributions to Ohio’s college and university students.  Current co-chairs of the Ohio Steering Committee include Jane Fawcett Hoover of Procter & Gamble and Tom Shoupe of Honda.  (Caroline Lotoux is manager of state relations.  For more information on the Ohio State Initiative, contact her at caroline@twc.edu.

Mel Narol, JD '76, Meet the 2002-03 New Jersey State Bar Association officers - President-elect - Mel Narol - Partner, Pellettieri, Rabstein & Altman, Princeton B.A., Dickinson College; M.A., Rutgers University; J.D., Ohio Northern University College of Law. Narol has served on numerous State Bar committees including those on long-term planning, diversionary ethics, state-county bar relations and a state business court. (Nasdaq:CAFI), parent company of Advantage Bank, announced the election of a new director to its board, Susan J. Insley, Executive Vice President and a Principal of Cochran Public Relations, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio. Richard C. Baylor, Camco and Advantage Bank's President and CEO made the announcement. Prior to joining Cochran Public Relations in 1996, Insley served as Senior Vice President of Honda of America Mfg., Inc. in Marysville, Ohio for eleven years. She was Partner attorney with Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease, LLP in Columbus from 1976 to 1985. Insley also worked as an Administrative and Legislative Assistant for U. S. Hon. Paul R. Cherry '78  A DeKalb County judge has been appointed magistrate in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana.   Judge Paul R. Cherry of Auburn was selected by the judges of the northern district to serve as magistrate in the court's Hammond division. He replaces Theresa Springmann, who recently was appointed district judge. He was sworn in Wednesday. Cherry presided over hundreds of trials while serving as judge of the very busy DeKalb Circuit Court from 1989 to 2003, a position to which he was elected three times. Before taking the bench, Cherry served as the DeKalb County prosecutor and as a deputy prosecutor. He received his bachelor's degree from Huntington College and his law degre from Ohio Northern University School of Law. He has taken a variety of courses at the National Judicial College and the Indiana Judicial College. He served as an adjunct professor at Huntington College for 18 years. Tom Straus, JD '78, has been appointed a member of the Jefferson County Governing Board of Education. Straus is a partner in the firm of Agresta, Bruzzese, Calabria, Keenan, Mooreland and Straus of Steubenville. (Ohio Northern Winter 2003 Issue).

Geoffrey Judge, JD '78, is a self-employed attorney in Newark and is running as Democrat for the position of Newark City Law Director. Judge grew up in Newark city schools, and graduated from Newark High School in 1970. He earned a B.A. from Miami University in 1974. He has practiced law in Newark since 1979, including criminal and civil trial work and other diverse areas; he is a trained and qualified mediator; he served as acting magistrate of small claims, and is an acting judge, of Licking County Municipal Court.

T. Eric Evans, JD '78, retired as prosecuting attorney of Blackford County Industries and vice president of corporate development at Integrated Services Inc. in Kokomo, IN. He owns and operates Gadbury Farm. (Ohio Northern Spring 2002)

Richard Mancini, JD '79, of Patterson, PA is running for Beaver Creak Judge of Common Pleas Court.  Mancini is in his 25th year of general practice of law; has extensive courtroom experience; has had solicitorships in several municipalities, including Council of Governments, Association for the Blind and Chiefs of Police Association, and the bar association board of governors. He has taught constitutional law at Geneva College. In regards to the position he states, "We have a great working relationship between our judges, bar association and court administrative offices. Our criminal system is in the process of instituting a new central booking process, which will be a tremendous improvement. The possible addition of a second magistrate for Central Court would help expedite the preliminary hearing process. Our civil trial caseload would be greatly aided if compulsory arbitrations could be given a more binding effect." (Upcoming Ohio Northern)

Greg R. Miller, JD ‘79, was sworn in as the new US Attorney for Northwest Florida on August 2, 2002 after being nominated by President Bush and approved by the US Senate. (Ohio Northern Winter ’02)

Thomas J. Broschak, ’80, brings more than 20 years of litigation experience to Ulmer & Berne, an Ohio-based firm with offices in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Chicago.  As a senior attorney in the firm’s Liability Defense Group, Broschak will focus on insurance defense litigation, business litigation, personal injury, toxic torts/asbestos and professional malpractice.  Broschak began his career as an Ohio assistant attorney general and then moved into firm work.  During his 22 years in practice, he has represented and advised individuals, corporations and multinational conglomerates in litigation-related matters.  He has experience serving as lead counsel in various matters involving serious injuries and wrongful death at both the trial and appellate levels and has also represented political subdivisions in tort and civil rights claims.  Broschak earned his undergraduate degree from West Chester State College before entering ONU College of Law. Thomas J. Lundstrom, JD '81, is the Senior Associate Counsel, Naval Air Systems Command for the Office of the General Counsel of the Navy in Patuxent River, MD. Herz II, JD '81, (See Alumni Highlights March, 2002) George Herz, II is Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Boston-based Uno Restaurant Corp. operating 115 company-owned and 73 franchise restaurants under the name Pizzeria Uno...Chicago Bar & Grill in 31 states across the country, also in South America, South Korea, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates. The company has 7,000 employees and Herz's responsibilites include operation of both the legal and the real estate departments. In the past, he also oversaw the human resources department. Herz graduated from Niagara University in Lewiston, N.Y. before earning his J.D. at Ohio Northern College of Law. He began as corporate counsel at Long Island-based Minuteman Press International and moved up to general counsel before he left in November 1995 for Sbarrro Inc. in Long Island. At Sbarro, he was general counsel and vice president until he joined Uno as General Counsel in November 1999. Herz is married and has four children between the ages of 4 and 19. His wife, Julie, is a CPA. They live in a suburb outside Boston. . (Ohio Northern Winter ’02)

Commander David S. Points, J.D. '83, (See Alumni Highlights April, 2002) Commander David S. Points is U.S. Navy, Director, Joint Information Bureau, JTG - 160, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba - Commander Points is also the Director, Joint Information Bureau, Joint Task Force - 160 (JTF - 160), Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He has served as the Lead Naval Reserve Public Affairs Officer for the Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Joint Task Force, Reserve Units. He is the former Commanding Officer of the Mobile Public Affairs Team Norfolk Detachment 208, Jacksonville, Florida.

Col. Richard Koeneke, JD '84, was promoted to colonel on October 1, 2003. He is a staff judge advocate for Marine Corps Air Bases, Western Region. He recently returned home from Operation Iraqi Freedom. (Ohion Northern Winter 2003 Issue)

George E. Schaefer III, JD '84, is running for Circuit Court Clerk in Norfolk, VA. Schaefer has served as the chief deputy in the Commonwealth Attorney's office since 2000. He worked as chief deputy clerk for the criminal division at the circuit clerk's office from 1996 to 1999. In 1991 and 1995 he ran for state delegate in the 86th District. Ned Hark, JD '84, a member of the Law Firm of Howard M. Goldmith, P.C., in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was elected Secretary of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Family Law Section at the Section's summer meeting in Philadelphia. William J. Spiker JD '84 - On April 24, 2002 Cleveland State University's President,  Michael Schwartz,  appointed three new senior-level administrators including William J. Spiker, J.D., as Vice President of University Relations and Development and Executive Director of the Cleveland State University Foundation, Inc., effective June 1, 2002.  Spiker comes to Cleveland State from Kent State University, where he has been the Associate Vice President of University Relations and Development since July, 1997.  While at Kent State, he implemented the University's first-ever $100 million comprehensive fundraising campaign and oversaw constituent development programs, major gifts, planned giving, annual fund, and worked closely with directors of the KSU Foundation, Inc.  He has been a respected leader in all of KSU's advancement activities, including alumi relations, university communications, and marketing.  Prior to serving at Kent State, he was Director of College Advancement and Director of Development at Mount Union College, Development Officer in the College of Engineering at the Ohio State University, and Director of Law Admissions at Ohio Northern University.  Mr. Spiker is licensed attorney-at-law, a member of the Council for the Support and Advancement of Education, and served as a founding member of the Northern Ohio Planned Giving Council.(Lexis Report)

Greg Fehribach, JD '86, an attorney from Indianapolis and a leading consultant on accessibility design projects across Indiana, has been appointed to the Ball State University Board of Trustees by Gov. Joseph Kernan. Fehribach, 46, earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1981 and a master's degree in personnel administration in 1983 from Ball State befored receiving his law degree from Ohio Northern University in 1985. He was Ball State's student body president in 1979-80 and was named outstanding alumnus in 1988 by the university's disabled student services office. John P. Kennedy, JD 88, (Columbus Dispatch, Alumni Highlights, March, 2002) in April 1988 was appointed to the City Council in Columbus, Ohio, to replace Charles A. Mentel, who quit to become council clerk. In Nov. 1991 he won election to a full four-year term, coming in second for the four seats up that year. In Nov. 1995 he won re-election by a landslide, leading all other candidates for four seats. In Nov. 1998 he won election as Franklin County Court of Appeals judge, defeating incumbent James W. Mason by a landslide. In Jan. 2002 he resigned as an appeals judge. He has served as Columbus City Council President and Appeals Court judge and after 14 years of holding elective office, Kennedy's focus nowadays is practicing law and lobbying. Michael A. Dinges, JD '93, (See Alumni Highlights, May, 2002) Williamsburg, PA., Michael A. Dinges was officially sworn in as District Attorney of Lycoming County on April 19, 2002. Dinges was sworn in after new U.S. Attorney, Thomas A. Marino, announced his formal relinquishment of the D.A. post to become U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania - a 33 county area. Dinges, a 34-year-old Williamsport native, has been on the county's prosecutorial team since 1996, and in his 10 years has been the county's top prosecutor. Dinges was joined by wife Christina and oldest son Josh as he took the oath of office. Coming from a family of teachers, Dinges stated, "I never wanted to be a lawyer." As a county native, Dinges said, he holds the values of those in the community - including the values of family and hard work.

Gregory Scott Hach, JD '99, after refusing a partnership offer at a NY personal injury firm in 2001, began his own law firm, Hach & Rose, LLP. He has done business in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, as well as Connecticut and Massachusetts. His firm recently began to focus on the areas of investor fraud class action cases, and antitrust prescription drug litigation. Marc W. Edwards, JD ’00, was hired by the District Attorney’s Office for the county of Santa Fe, N.M.  in May of 2002.  He was assigned to the DWI unit.  Within seven months, he became the supervising trial attorney for two counties with three attorneys and three legal secretaries on his staff.  He prosecuted over 1,000 DWIs and other misdemeanor cases and won numerous trials.  In April of 2003, he was awarded the Rookie Prosecutor of the Year for the state of New Mexico by the Bar Association.  As of July 2003, he was promoted to the senior trial attorney’s position and began handling felony drug prosecution. Kyle T. Thompson, JD ’01, as of Sept. 1, 2002, has been named new assistant county attorney for Franklin County, Kentucky and also, an associate in the firm Boyd, Sparks, and Broaddus.  The firm basically consists of all the county attorneys and practices in general civil litigation.
