Exhibit Highlights First-year Art Students’ Accomplishments

May 15, 2008
The Ohio Northern University department of art and design will host the annual Foundations Honors Exhibit on Monday, May 12 through Friday, Aug. 29 in the lobby of the Elzay Gallery of Art.

The juried exhibition is open to all ONU students enrolled in the foundations courses during the 2007-08 academic year. Work in any medium is accepted, including drawings, two-and three-dimensional work, color theory, and ceramics. Faculty members of the foundations program assist students in making their initial selections for the show, and a juror makes the final selections and awards.

Students receiving awards this year include: first place, Jeff Gibbons from Toledo, Ohio, for "Wonky Lamp World"; second place, Matt Glove from Canfield, Ohio, for "A Different View," and third place, Katelyn Amendolara from Canfield, Ohio, for "Untitled."

Fred Frances, Katie Merchak, Bethany Schreck, and Tiffanie Seillier received honorable mention.

Melissa Eddings, associate professor of art and coordinator of this year's exhibition, says the exhibit reflects the accomplishments of first-year students. "The foundations program courses help bridge the gap between high school and college. Students develop a strong visual vocabulary and competent form-in-space depiction. From this strong beginning, students can begin to communicate the mind's eye in a confident, believable way - and start to share their personal voice with the rest of the community."

Admission to the exhibit is free and open to the public, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information about the University's 2007-08 gallery season, contact the department of art and design (419) 772-2160 or
