Student Honored With Charles J. Ping Award

Apr 11, 2008
Grace Nkatha M'mworia, a senior in molecular biology from Jacksonville, Fla., is Ohio Northern University's winner of the 2007-08 Charles J. Ping Student Community Service Award from Ohio Campus Compact (OCC).

M'mworia has served as the coordinator of ONU's Ada Friends for two years. Ada Friends matches college students with Ada elementary students in a modified version of Big Brothers Big Sisters. This year, M'mworia matched 53 Ada students with 53 ONU students and organized an opportunity for the "Bigs" and "Littles" to experience pottery making under the supervision of art department students. In addition, she arranged two reading days at the Ada Public Library. This was in addition to numerous other gatherings for Ada Friends.

"For Ada Friends to be successful, it takes a hard-working and dedicated leader. Grace is both and she has been a joy to work with," commented Vernon F. LaSala, chaplain of the University.

The Charles J. Ping Student Community Service Award is granted annually to undergraduates from OCC-member institutions who exhibit outstanding leadership in their community service endeavors, both on campus and in the community. Candidates must be nominated by the president of their college or university.

Comprised of 46 Ohio colleges and universities, OCC was established to support the development of campus-wide student and institutional participation in community and public service
