APhA-ASP Chapter Garners National Patient Care Award

Ohio Northern University's American Pharmacist Association Academy of Student Pharmacists chapter won the National Patient Care award in Region 4 at the national conference in San Diego.

ONU won the Region 4 award for its campaign "American Pharmacists Association Heartburn Awareness Challenge 2007." Region 4 includes all colleges of pharmacy in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.

The award is based on originality, level of student participation, level of collaboration with other campus organizations and the overall impact of heartburn education on the public health of the local community.

The ONU chapter's campaign held events during which community members could be evaluated for heartburn. The students traveled to several small communities throughout West Central Ohio.

"This program was beneficial not only to the community, but to students as well," said Kristen Finley, assistant professor of pharmacy practices, who served as the campaign's advisor. "Participating in such events gives students the opportunity to learn how to properly counsel patients and improve overall communication skills. This challenge has positively impacted our student pharmacists, patients in the community and the overall profession of pharmacy."

Meghan Davlin, a fifth-year pharmacy student from Sandusky, Ohio, served as the chairman of the committee. Krysten Bucholtz, a second-year pharmacy student from Garfield Heights, Ohio; Melissa Negro, a second-year pharmacy student from North Huntingdon, Pa.; Erin Rhodes, a third-year pharmacy student from Swanton, Md.; Cynthia Nguyen, a third-year student from Troy, Ohio; and Samantha Cunningham, a fourth-year student from Adena, Ohio, all served as co-chair members.
