Dr. John K. Estell

Biography: 

Dr. John K. Estell is a Professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department; from 2001 until 2010 he served as Department Chair. Dr. Estell primarily teaches first-year programming, first-year engineering, and senior design courses. He has over 70 publications in various journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings, and is the recipient of several Best Paper awards. Dr. Estell is well-known in the assessment community for his development of the Faculty Course Assessment Report (FCAR) and its use in the student outcomes assessment process. He has presented his research in this area at several venues, including having been an invited speaker on multiple occasions at the annual ABET Symposium. Dr. Estell also serves as an ABET Program Evaluator for both the Engineering and Computing Accreditation Commissions. He has been professionally active with the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) for many years; he was the Computers in Education Division’s Program Chair for both the 2011 and 2012 ASEE Annual Conferences, and is currently serving a two-year term as Chair of the Division. Dr. Estell is a founding member and currently serves as Vice President of The Pledge of the Computing Professional, an organization dedicated to the promotion of ethics in the computing professions through a standardized rite-of-passage ceremony.
