Jobs While at College
Student employees play an important role in the day-to-day operations of Ohio Northern University. Academic departments, administrative and student support offices all over campus provide students with real-world work experience. Students learn what employers call “highly valued soft skills” or personal attributes such as written and oral communication, team playing, flexibility and adaptability, problem-solving and resourcefulness, decision-making, commitment, leadership, time management, confidence, creativity and problem-solving.
Student employment is a broad term that includes federal work-study or non-work-study jobs on campus as well as jobs with off-campus employers in Ada, Bluffton, Findlay, Kenton or Lima – towns that are all within easy driving distance of campus.
A Word about Federal Work-Study
Students seeking on-campus, federal work-study employment must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine their eligibility. Students who qualify for federal work-study earn a regular bi-weekly paycheck, which they can use to make payments on school loans or meet day-to-day expenses. The work-study yearly allotment makes up a portion of the student’s total financial aid by reducing loan eligibility, thus helping reduce loan debt. Students can work and earn up to the amount offered on their financial aid package.
Employment can have either a positive or negative impact on students. As parents, you likely know your student better than he or she knows themself! Consider whether your student will be overwhelmed by working and potentially lose focus on academics. Or, will employment provide your student with a needed mental break from the rigor of academics where he or she can more quickly gain a sense of accomplishment?
If your student chooses to seek student employment, encourage them to apply NOW for on-campus jobs. Most campus hiring managers have already posted their student employment jobs for next year in our online jobs board, Polar Careers powered by Symplicity.
