Students receives travel award
Meredith Weingart, a sophomore in civil engineering from New Castle, Pa., has won a travel award toward her trip to the Dominican Republic with Northern Engineering Without Boundaries (NEWB) in May. Battelle offered the award for her work in EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service).
"This mission trip is an extraordinary opportunity. I was able help change lives, and unknowingly, the Dominicans changed mine. Overall, the experience had a huge positive impact on my life, and we'd like to extend the same opportunity to others," said Jen Smith, ONU alum who works at Battelle.
Meredith has worked on a project to design workshops for teachers and community members for the upcoming week-long visit to the Dominican from May 17-24, 2014. The group will offer workshops in Dominican schools, tackle construction projects and run healthcare clinics and projects. Ken Reid, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of engineering education, and Robin White, assistant professor of nursing, will accompany a group of 29 students and alumni.
