Ohio Northern University College of Law to present speech from veteran, sexual assault survivor
Kori Cioca, a coast guard veteran and sexual assault survivor, will be the guest speaker at an Ohio Northern University Law Career Services Brown Bag Brief in the Celebrezze Moot Court Room on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 11:30 a.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.
Cioca, a U.S. Coast guard veteran, was sexually assaulted and raped while serving in the military. She was the lead witness in a landmark lawsuit that attempted to bring awareness about sexual assault in the military and to ensure safety for active-duty service members.
Cioca also was featured in the Academy Award-nominated documentary “The Invisible War,” which exposes the epidemic of sexual assault in the military. Since its premiere at Sundance, the film has circulated through the highest levels of the Pentagon and the administration. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta watched “The Invisible War” and, two days later, directed military commanders to hand over all sexual assault investigations to a higher-ranking colonel. At the same time, Panetta announced that each branch of the armed forces would establish a Special Victims Unit.
This event is sponsored by the ONU Veterans’ Association, the Law Association of Women and the College of Law.
