Communication and Theatre Arts to host retirement celebrations
On Saturday, March 16, 2013, an open house, performance and reception will mark the retirements of Nils Riess, professor of communications arts, director of media communication services and performing arts, and chair of the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts, and Cathy Smalley, BA ’73, costumer for the Freed Center for Performing Arts.
An open house at the Freed Center for the Performing Arts is set from noon to 3 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., a performance in honor of Riess and Smalley will take place in the Freed Center, followed by a reception at The Inn at Ohio Northern University. Reservations can be made by calling the Freed Center box office at 419-772-1900 between noon and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Reiss, a graduate of Valparaiso University and Northern Illinois University, has taught at ONU since 1975 and has been responsible for expanding the theatre program to include a dance minor, a BFA in musical theatre, a guest artist program and an international studies program. In addition to founding the International Play Festival, he has hosted numerous international artists and facilitated student study programs and internships throughout the world.
Smalley, a 1973 ONU graduate, has been costumer for the Freed Center since 1991, managing the costumes for hundreds of performances.
