Senior Lindsay Naiman succeeds at two seemingly opposite majors and her career at ONU goes out on a high note

For senior Lindsay Naiman, from Findlay, Ohio, being immersed in an Ohio Northern University theater production is nothing new. However, unlike the 13 other shows she has performed in since her freshman year, Naiman is tackling a brand new challenge—she’s taking on an operatic role and performing with a cast of over 60 other actors.

It comes as no surprise that this seasoned veteran is majoring in musical theatre. However, she juggles her demanding performance schedule with a second major in criminal justice.
“I chose Northern because I was able to explore both majors at the same time,” says Naiman. “You can have two completely different areas of interest and the University will support you.”

Her latest focus and senior capstone project is to play the role of Pamina in ONU’s upcoming production of The Magic Flute, an elaborate two-act opera production based on one of Mozart’s classic pieces. Known for its underlying symbolism and intricate plot line, The Magic Flute has become one of the most widely performed and best-loved operas.

Even though Naiman has grown very comfortable as a part of ONU’s theatre department in the last four years, she likes that her recent role has given her the challenge and opportunity to try a very different vocal style. “This production gives me a chance to showcase a side of my voice that my family and friends don’t usually get to hear,” says Naiman. “Plus, it’s good for me as a senior to have the experience working with so many professionals.”

Naiman also works closely with the show’s director, Kirsten Osbun-Manley, on a daily basis. As Naiman’s voice professor, Osbun-Manley is able to give Naiman advice during her lesson times that allows her to improve her performance in-between her criminal justice classes.
Naiman attributes the personalized attention she’s received at ONU to her success in both majors. “The coursework forces you to hold yourself accountable, but you have enough space to figure out your own strengths at the same time.”

Despite two majors with endless professional possibilities, Naiman says that choosing one career path over the other is not what matters most. “The best preparation is knowing who you are,” Naiman says.
