‘Reefer Madness’ – the musical

ONU’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present “Reefer Madness” in the Stambaugh Studio Theatre from Thursday, Oct. 18, to Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 20, and Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at 2 p.m. Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence.

ONU to host fall open houses
Ohio Northern University welcomes high school seniors to campus for two open houses, the first on Oct. 19 and the second on Nov. 3. Prospective students will learn about specific Ohio Northern programs, meet with current students, faculty and staff, and attend informational admissions and financial aid sessions. A complimentary lunch and campus tour also will be provided.

ONU presents Mystic Drumz
Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present Mystic Drumz on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. Mystic Drumz is a unique, multimedia rhythm and sound program for children that specializes in world music and focuses on the environment. This hands-on interactive performance showcases eclectic international percussion instruments from around the world, linking geography to sounds, rhythms to science, and laughter to learning.

Setting the Standard: British Wind Band Music’
The Ohio Northern University Wind Orchestra will perform “Setting the Standard: British Wind Band Music” in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m.

Spotlight: Faculty & Staff 

Residence Life supports Imagination Library
The Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Hardin County received $5,000 on Oct. 8, thanks to the efforts of ONU’s Office of Residence Life. The donation will provide books for 177 Hardin County children for one full year.  Dolly Parton's Imagination Library supports 572 children in Hardin County, providing a book every month to them at no charge from birth until they enter kindergarten.

Criminal Child Neglect and the ‘Free Range Kid’
David Pimentel, visiting associate professor of law, will present his newest paper “Criminal Child Neglect and the ‘Free Range Kid:’ Is Overprotective Parenting the New Standard of Care?” at the Central States Law Schools Association 2012 Scholarship Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 19-20, 2012. The paper has been accepted for publication by the Utah Law Review, and has already been downloaded over 17,500 times in the few months it's been available on the Internet. It has also been featured on the Wall Street Journal's Editorial Page as "Notable and Quotable." The article is available online.

Paper evaluates Dominican Republic teacher workshops
Ken Reid, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, is coauthor of a paper that reports the initial results of teacher workshops offered for teachers in the Dominican Republic earlier this year.

Professors, students participate in social studies conference
Dr. James Schul, assistant professor of education, and Dr. Russ Crawford, associate professor of history, along with a team of students, took part in and made presentations at the Ohio Council for the Social Studies annual conference held Oct. 2 in Columbus, Ohio.

Biology alums to speak during Physical Therapy Month
In recognition of October as Physical Therapy Month, two recent graduates, Laura Vuyk, BS’08, and Joshua Salsbury, BS ’12, will be speaking to ONU students. On Oct. 17 Vuyk will be speaking about her undergraduate, graduate and work experiences at 7 p.m., in Mathile 112. On Oct. 25, Salsbury will present “Surviving Your First Year of PT School” at 7 p.m. in Mathile 112.

‘Football Americain: Or How Our Game Stumbled Across the Atlantic’
Phi Beta Delta, the honorary for international scholars, is sponsoring a presentation on American football à la française on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m., in the Dicke Forum. Russ Crawford, associate professor of history, will present "American Football in France." Crawford traveled to Paris and points north to learn about the history of the sport in that country. Football has had a difficult time spreading to other nations, and the story of how the game crossed the Atlantic to France is an interesting one. Don't miss it.

Lehman is Robinson Young Alumni of the Year

Ohio Northern University has named Ronda K. Lehman, a 1998 graduate of ONU’s Raabe College of Pharmacy and current vice president of operations at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio, as the 2012 recipient of the William L. Robinson Young Alumni of the Year Award.
Lehman was honored prior to Ohio Northern’s Homecoming football game on Oct. 6.

Mifsud receives Outstanding Service Award
Ohio Northern University’s James F. Dicke College of Business Administration honored Oscar J. Mifsud with an Outstanding Service Award on Saturday, Oct. 6. The award, given annually at Homecoming, honors individuals who have provided sustained and outstanding service to, and whose contributions have positively impacted, the College of Business Administration and Ohio Northern. This is the fourth year that an Outstanding Service Award has been presented by the college.

Help the future of arts education! SNAAP Survey open now
Ohio Northern University is participating in the 2012 Strategic National Arts Alumni (SNAAP) survey – a one-of-a-kind survey that explores the lives of arts alumni nationwide. ONU alumni completing the survey this fall will have access to a website to see how their educational and career experiences compare with alumni across the country. See where other arts graduates live, where they work, what they earn and how their arts educations have influenced their lives. Arts alumni who graduated but have not yet received an email invitation to complete the survey should go to snaap.indiana.edu to take the survey.
