Two ONU Biology alums to speak for physical therapy month

October is physical therapy month and Laura Vuyk, BS '08, and Joshua Salsbury BS '12, will be our guest speakers.

Laura Vuyk graduated With High Distinction from ONU in 2008 with a bachelor of science in biology (prephysical therapy). She finished her doctor of physical therapy (DPT) program at the University of Toledo in 2011. Since earning her degree and passing her licensure test, Vuyk has been employed as a full time physical therapist at Kingston Care Center of Sylvania, Ohio. Recently, she also started working one day a week at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, Ohio. Vuyk has been serving the older adult population in sub-acute, long term and outpatient settings and her overall career goal is to attain a manual therapy certification and work in an outpatient orthopedic setting. Vuyk will be talking about her undergraduate, graduate and work experiences at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Mathile 112.

Joshua Salsbury graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2012 with a bachelor of science in biology (prephysical therapy). Salsbury is currently a member of the doctor of physical therapy class of 2015 at the Ohio State University, where he recently completed his first semester and is currently in the middle of his orthopedic curriculum. His interests in physical therapy include sports medicine and outpatient orthopedic settings. He will be presenting "Surviving Your First Year of PT School" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, in Mathile 112.

The program is sponsored by ONU’s Department of Biological and Allied Health Sciences and the Pre-Physical Therapy and Pre-Occupational Therapy Club. In addition, club members will be taking part in volunteer activities at the Primrose Retirement Community in Lima, Ohio. Primrose Retirement Communities provide independent living and assisted living senior care with an emphasis on value, comfort, security and convenience.
