Walking for Wellness: General Information

This Fall Semester, ONU HealthWise will be starting Walking for Wellness, a 12-week walking program open to employees of Ohio Northern University. Each participant in the program will be provided with daily walking goals and a pedometer to track walking progress.

Once you sign up for the program, you will be contacted by ONU HealthWise to set up an initial appointment before the program begins. At this appointment, you will be asked to complete an initial survey, and you will be provided with a pedometer.  We will also check and record your weight, body mass index, percent body fat, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and glucose level (you must be fasting for these labs).

Every Friday, each participant will need to report to Kinghorn to have his or her pedometer and walking log checked. At the pedometer checks, a member of the HealthWise team will make sure each participant is completing the daily walking goals, as well as check weight and blood pressure.  Once a month during the program, each participant will have an appointment with a HealthWise pharmacist to discuss progress, check weight and blood pressure, and address any questions or concerns!

For each health goal achieved (i.e. blood pressure <120/80 mmHg or normal BMI), the participant will receive one raffle ticket and for each health goal maintained from a previous appointment, the participant will receive two raffle tickets for a chance to win great prizes at the end of the program! Raffle prizes include a free dinner at The Inn, a Northern on Main gift card, a Nook, and more!

You’ll want to be sure you are meeting your step goals, because ONU HealthWise will be handing out prizes to those who have reached their walking goals at certain pedometer checks! When the 12 weeks are complete, each participant will need to schedule a final appointment with HealthWise, where they will complete a final survey, and weight, body mass index, percent body fat, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and glucose level will be checked again.
