Students honored with Dankook Awards

Ohio Northern University presented Dankook Awards to Chelsea Mack, a fall 2011 graduate from Euclid, Ohio, and Nicholas Baker, a spring 2012 graduate from Loveland, Ohio, in a ceremony prior to the undergraduate commencement on Sunday, May 13.

Presented since 1974, the Dankook Award is an annual reciprocal award exchanged between Dankook University in South Korea and Ohio Northern University. The award recognizes students with outstanding records in academics, student leadership, co-curricular activities and service.

The selection process begins when each of ONU’s undergraduate deans nominates two students to receive the award. Next, ONU’s vice president of academic affairs selects two students from this pool of eight and sends their names to the University president for approval. Finally, the two names are sent to Dankook University.

Mack is a fall 2011 graduate, having completed the international business and economics program in The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration. Within the college, Mack served on the dean’s advisory council and in the International Business Club. She was a member of several honoraries, including Mortar Board and Phi Kappa Phi. To build her experience as an international business major, Mack completed a summer study-abroad session in South Korea and China during 2009. Outside the classroom, Mack spent three years with the symphony orchestra, was a member of the leadership in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and served as an ONU Bear Ambassador for the past two years.

Baker graduated in spring 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and a minor in mathematics. He was active in the College of Engineering’s American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics chapter, helping with the design and development of the remote control aircraft that this chapter builds and competes with each year. Baker was a member of the engineering honorary Tau Beta Pi and the math honorary Kappa Mu Epsilon. Outside of engineering, Baker was a varsity letter-winner on the men’s cross country team and a three-year conference qualifier on the men’s track and field team.
