Kanwit’s to publish book on Victorian art commentary
Dr. John Paul Kanwit, assistant professor of English, is the author of the book Authority and Access: Victorian Art Commentary and the Popularization of Art, which has been accepted for publication by the Ohio State University Press.
The book examines the development of specialized art commentary in a period when art education became a national concern in Britain. The explosion of Victorian visual culture as illustrated in the rapid expansion of galleries and museums, the technological innovations of which photography is only the most famous, the public debates over household design, and the high profile granted to such developments as the Aesthetic Movement, provided art critics unprecedented social power. By including influential but now less well-known women critics as well as more famous ones such as John Ruskin and Oscar Wilde, Authority and Access allows a more penetrating and accurate understanding of this pervasive aspect of Victorian society.
