College of Law to present the 2012 Carhart Program on Legal Ethics

Ohio Northern University’s Pettit College of Law will present the 2012 Carhart Program on Legal Ethics on Friday, March 2, at 11 a.m. in the Celebrezze Moot Court Room. The program will feature professor Charles Dunlap’s presentation, “Ethical Issues in the Practice of National Security Law: A Perspective” and professor David Luban’s “The Government Lawyer as Advisor: Some Hard Lessons of the Last 10 Years.”

Dunlap is a visiting professor of the practice of law and the executive director of the Center on Law, Ethics and National Security at Duke University School of Law. Prior to joining the law faculty at Duke, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1972-2010, attaining the rank of major general. In his final assignment as deputy judge advocate general of the Air Force, Dunlap assisted the judge advocate general of the Air Force in the supervision of more than 2,200 judge advocates, 350 civilian lawyers, 1,400 enlisted paralegals, and 500 civilians around the world and advised Air Staff commanders at all levels.

Luban is the Bacon-Kilkenny Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago and Ph.D. in philosophy from Yale University. Throughout his career, he has been visiting professor and Distinguished Senior Fellow in Legal Ethics at Yale Law School and Leah Kaplan Visiting Professor of Human Rights at Stanford Law School. Luban also has held visiting appointments at Dartmouth College, the University of Melbourne and Harvard Law School. Luban has held a Guggenheim Fellowship and Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and won awards for his legal ethics scholarship from the New York State Bar and the American Bar Foundation.

The Fred L. Carhart Memorial Program in Legal Ethics was established at ONU’s College of Law in 2007 through an endowment from the estate of alumnus Dwight L. Carhart in memory of his father, Fred L. Carhart, a lifelong attorney in Marion, Ohio, until his death in 1948. The program brings eminent scholars, jurists and lawyers to Ohio Northern to actively engage in lectures, seminars and panel discussions for the benefit of students, the college and University communities, the public, and the bench and bar. The Carhart Program funds lectures and symposia in alternating years.
