‘Miss Saigon’ comes to ONU

Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present a concert production of “Miss Saigon” on Feb. 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.

Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Madame Butterfly,” “Miss Saigon” portrays the tragedy of a Vietnamese woman and an American army sergeant’s romance during the Vietnam War. Under the direction of Lloyd Butler, music director of the musical theatre program, and Kirsten E. Osbun-Manley, lecturer in music and musical theatre, ONU’s symphony and the musical theatre program will combine to present this musical in full orchestral scoring and limited staging.

Playing the roles of Kim and Thuy are visiting actors Gilda Bernal and Patrick Contreras from San Luis Pitosi, Mexico. Derek Brookens, a junior musical theatre major from Port Allegany, Pa., will play the role of Chris, and Micah Hein, a senior language arts education and musical theatre major from Wilmington, Ohio, will play the Engineer. Kathleen Weston, a musical theatre major from Grosse Pointe, Mich., will play Ellen, and Scott Swallen, a fourth-year pharmacy and biology major from Mason, Ohio, will play John.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors and students and $9 for children. The Freed Center box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phone orders are accepted with American Express, MasterCard, VISA or Discover by calling 419-772-1900. Tickets also are available online at www.freedcenter.com
