ONU to host education speaker

Ohio Northern University’s Center for Teacher Education will host a professional development program for educators, “Including all learners in a mixed-ability classroom,” in the McIntosh Center Ballroom on Nov. 14, 2011, at 7 p.m.

Dr. Cynthia Cardenas-Kolak, of Houston, Texas, will be the featured speaker. Cardenas-Kolak earned her doctorate in educational leadership and cultural studies from the University of Houston. She worked as an ESL specialist and has been involved in the professional development of teachers for more than 15 years. She has consulted and trained extensively throughout the state of Texas in the fields of ESL, sheltered instruction and intercultural competencies.

Program participants will learn about the VESTED Instructional Approach and how its six stages of lesson delivery can help teachers provide for greater inclusion and accessibility in the content areas. Participants also will take part in a model lesson and examine how it tends to the needs of all students: English learners, mainstream, exceptional and the gifted.

The program is free and open to area teachers and administrators. To RSVP or for questions, contact Dr. Debra Gallagher, assistant professor of education, at 419-772-2835.
