Ohio Northern University to hold debate on Issue 2
Ohio Northern University will conduct a debate concerning Issue 2 (Senate Bill 5) on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. in the ONU Pettit College of Law Large Moot Court room (129). The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by ONU’s College Democrats, College Republicans, and Pi Sigma Alpha, ONU’s political science honor society.

‘Branding My Business’
On Nov. 1, 2011, Matt Jennings, chief executive officer of Quest Federal Credit Union, will speak on “Branding My Business: Names, Logos and Target Market” as part of a workshop series offered by the Ohio Northern University Entrepreneur Center.

ONU to participate in Choose Ohio First scholarship

Ohio Northern University has been chosen to participate in the prestigious Choose Ohio First Programs of Innovation scholarship initiative offered by the Ohio Board of Regents.

The Ohio Northern University Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents “John Tartaglia’s ImaginOcean” on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m.

Band-o-Rama, Oct. 30
The Ohio Northern University music department presents Marching Band-O-Rama 2011 in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at 4 p.m.

Town and Gown Banquet, Nov. 7
The 46th annual Ada Town and Gown Banquet will be held in the McIntosh Center ballroom on the campus of Ohio Northern University on Monday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m.

Spotlight: Faculty & Staff 

Martin organizes law symposium
John H. Martin, professor of law, is a primary organizer of the symposium, "The Uniform Probate Code: Remaking of American Succession Law" held Oct. 21 at the University of Michigan Law School. The symposium is underwritten by the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel Foundation and is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform. The journal will publish the papers presented at the symposium. Prof. Martin will present a paper titled, "Non-judicial Estate Settlement."

Articles published
Dr. Jim Schul, assistant professor of education, has five recent articles published or accepted for publication.

Articles published in Organic Chemistry, Green Chemistry

Drs. Jake Zimmerman, assistant professor of chemistry, and Madhuri Manpadi, teacher-scholar post-doc in chemistry, recently published two articles based on results from their research projects at ONU. Russell Spatney and Aaron Baker, BS ’11, are coauthors on these publications.

Frohnen participates in conferences
Bruce Frohnen, associate professor of law, participated in a conference on the thought of French thinker Bertrand de Jouvenel, on Sept. 29-Oct. 1.  He will also participate in a conference on "Empire, Religion, and Liberty in the Thirty Years War" from Nov. 3-5.  Both conferences are hosted by Liberty Fund and bring together a select group of interdisciplinary scholars from institutions including Indiana University-Bloomington, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Colorado at Boulder to discuss common readings and issues, especially as they relate to the development and maintenance of constitutionalism.

Gainey is Santa VP
Richard Gainey, associate professor and director of electronic media and broadcasting, has been elected to the position of vice president of The Buckeye Santas, one of the nation's largest "Real Bearded Santas" organizations. In October of 2012, Gainey will move to the position of president of the group, which meets monthly in Columbus. In August of this year, Gainey attended the School4Santas, a national training program for professional Santas. Gainey has been an RBS (Real Bearded Santa) for the past five years appearing throughout west central Ohio.

NCPA chapter garners honor for second consecutive year
The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Student Chapter of Ohio Northern University’s Raabe College of Pharmacy was named the 2011 Student Chapter of the Year at the 113th NCPA Annual Convention and Trade Exposition in Nashville, Tenn., on Oct. 10. There are currently 95 NCPA Student Chapters across the nation.

Students make presentations at national meeting
Chemistry seniors, Russell Spatney from Mantau, Ohio, and Thomas Allen from Wilmington, Ohio,  recently presented their research at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in Denver, Colo.

DeColibus presents poster

Dawn DeColibus, a junior from Strongsville, Ohio, majoring in biology and minoring in geography-GIS, presented a poster at the 2011 annual meeting of the East Lakes Division of the American Association of Geographers, held at Youngstown State University on Oct. 15. Her poster, titled “Buffalo Berry and Glacial Slumps in Ohio and Pennsylvania,” highlighted the experience she gained as an intern last summer working with the Botany and Natural Resources Department of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Adopt-A-Student internship program. During her internship, DeColibus helped identify the presence of buffalo berry bushes in northern Ohio and used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to manage this threatened plant species.

Pharmacy job fair set
The 2011 Pharmacy Jobs Fair will be Oct. 31, hosted by ONU’s Office of Career Services. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Field House with an opportunity to sign up for afternoon interviews. Register online. For more information, contact Mindy Nungester at 419-772-2760.
