ONU hosts Mathematics Shoot-Out
The Ninth Annual Ohio Northern University Mathematics Shoot-Out High School Competition was held Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011 at the Mathile Center.
Eighteen area high schools competed, including Delphos Jefferson, Ada, Allen East, McComb, Bellefontaine, Van Buren, Liberty-Benton, Lima Central Catholic, Pandora Gilboa, Elgin, Arcadia, North Baltimore, Cory-Rawson, Lima Senior Progressive Academy, Benjamin Logan, Leipsic, Bluffton and Perry. Each school sent a team of four student competitors to vie for the ONU Shoot-Out Trophy.
The students spent the morning working in small groups to formulate solutions to a set of 60 challenging mathematics problems. After lunch, two teams, each composed of nine high schools, were formed to face off against each other in a game of Mathematics Dodgeball.
During the game, members of each team challenged members of the opposing team to present solutions to problems from the morning session. A panel of judges graded the solutions presented and awarded points based upon their assessment. Players accumulated points for both their team and their schools. Medals, plaques, and the Shoot-Out Trophy were awarded at the end of the day.
This year’s winner was the team from Lima Central Catholic. LCC has now won for two consecutive years. Each student who participated in the Shoot-Out received a commemorative certificate.
