ONU to host ninth annual math competition
Ohio Northern University will host 18 high schools during its ninth annual Mathematics Shoot-Out high school competition on Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Mathile Center for the Natural Sciences.
Students will begin the competition in the morning, working in small groups to formulate solutions to a set of 60 math problems. In the afternoon, the competitors will divide into two teams of nine schools each to compete in a game of “Mathematics Dodgeball.”
During the game, members of each team challenge members of the opposing team to present solutions to problems from the morning session. A panel of judges will grade the presented solutions and award points based on their assessment. Players accumulate points for both their team and their schools.
The winning school will receive the Shoot-Out Trophy. Last year’s winners, Lima Central Catholic, will be defending their title. Other schools will be awarded medals and plaques, and each student who participates in the Shoot-Out will receive a commemorative certificate.
Each school is sending four students to participate at the event. Other schools participating in the Shoot-Out are Ada, Allen East, Arcadia, Bellefontaine, Benjamin Logan, Bluffton, Cory-Rawson, Delphos Jefferson, Elgin, McComb, North Baltimore, Leipsic, Liberty-Benton, Lima Central Catholic, Lima Senior Progressive Academy, Pandora Gilboa, Perry, and Van Buren.
