Incoming student numbers increase

Ohio Northern University announced a 14 percent increase this year in incoming students and an overall jump in new enrollment for all five of its colleges for the 2011-12 academic year.

True FreshmanMusical ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ comes to ONU

The Ohio Northern University Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” on Sept. 15-18 at 7:30 p.m. with two matinee showings on Sept. 17-18 at 2 p.m. Conceived by Rebecca Feldman, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a one-act musical comedy centering on a fictional spelling bee set in the geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School, where six quirky adolescents compete in a competition run by three equally quirky adults. Meet freshman Trevor Dorner, one of the stars of "Spelling Bee."

Amy Marshall Dance Company to perform Sept. 24

Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents the Amy Marshall Dance Company with the ONU Dance Company on Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.

College of Law to cohost Ohio Supreme Court Lecture Series
Albie Sachs, former Justice on the Constitutional Court of South Africa, will share his life story from fighting for freedom and human rights to a seat on his nation's court at the Supreme Court of Ohio’s next Forum on the Law lecture on Sept. 20.

Sign up for fall open houses
Ohio Northern University welcomes high school seniors to campus for a series of four open houses beginning Sept. 24. Prospective students will learn aboutspecific Ohio Northern programs, meet with current students, faculty and staff, and attend informational admissions and financial aid sessions. A complimentary lunch and campus tour also will be provided.

ONU to host Tibetan Monks
Ohio Northern will host six Tibetan monks for the Garden Shartse Monks' Tour from Oct. 12-19. The monks will share many traditions with the community like performing sacred ritual dances, empowerment, music and chanting, and teachings. The campus will also be able to experience the sacred art of sand mandala. According to the monks,"Sand Mandalas are cosmic diagrams that represent the celestial mansion of deity." Classroom visits also are scheduled to lecture on topics like East Asian history, eastern religious traditions, "The Buddha in America," Buddhist teachings, Karma, "The Six Perfections"
and "The Four Noble Truths."

Professor named to board of directors of Technology Student Association

Dr. Kenneth Reid, director of freshman engineering and associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Ohio Northern University, was recently named to the board of directors of the Technology Student Association (TSA).

Biology professors author textbook

“Microbiology Case Studies,” a new textbook by Drs. Rodney Anderson and Linda Young, professors of biological sciences, is scheduled to be released in October.

Tuition Exchange information session

Free flu shots offered to students
The ONU Health Center will provide free flu shots to ONU students from 5 to 7 p.m., Sept. 27 and Oct. 6. Students who receive their shot during these times will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Visa gift card, sponsored by the Society of Medical Professionals (SMP).

Study Abroad Fair set
ONU’s Annual Study Abroad Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 14 in the McIntosh Activities Room. Representatives from international education organizations will provide information on various education abroad opportunities. Study is available to ONU students in over 40 countries, covering six continents.
