Students move in at ONU

When the 2011-12 academic year began on Monday, more than 800 new undergraduate students, a 12 percent increase from fall 2010, joined the ONU family. Among the new students are 74 international students from 10 countries. Of that group 32 are degree-seeking or exchange students and 15 are enrolled in the new Intensive English Program. Community invited to join ONU Men’s or Women’s Chorus

New members are invited to join ONU’s Men’s or Women’s chorus for the coming season. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings.

Freed Center opens season with 'Doktor Kaboom!'
The Freed Center’s 2011-1012 season begins Sept. 3 with “Doktor Kaboom!” The interactive science comedy show is part of the center’s children’s series. Click here for a look at the complete 2011-2012 season.

'Holiday Spectacular' children's auditions set
ONU will hold children's auditions for the annual "Holiday Spectacular" a 6 p.m., Sept. 25, at the Freed Center for the Performing Arts.

This week on 'Leverage'
Actor Matt DiBiasio, son of President Dan DiBiasio and his wife Chris Burns-DiBiasio, will be seen in a role on the television series "Leverage" (TNT) on Sunday, Aug.28, 9 p.m (EST). Matthew, 27, is a professional actor in Portland, Ore. In this week's episode, he plays a chess player who appears in scenes with actor Timothy Hutton.

New Faces
Meet the new members of the ONU faculty. New faculty members as well as new students are starting the new academic year at ONU.

Grant to fund history education

Dr. James Schul, assistant professor of education, has received a $12,603 grant from the Library of Congress Teaching With Primary Sources program. Schul and Dr. Russ Crawford, assistant professor of history, will work with teachers in the Allen East School District as well as ONU teacher candidates in the project.

Faculty exhibit opens 2011-12 gallery season
The Art Department of ONU opens its gallery season with a reception for the faculty art exhibition from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 26, in the Elzay Gallery. Associate Professor of Art & Design Melissa Eddings will speak about her work during a public lecture at 5:15 p.m. The exhibit continues through Sept. 18.

Freed Center receives Ohio Arts Council grant
A $10,563 stainability grant from The Ohio Arts Council for 2011-2012 will be used to assist the Freed Center for the Performing Arts in providing professional arts experiences to Ohio Northern students and area residents.

Chapel services begin Thursday, Aug. 25
With the new academic year, chapel service will move to 11 a.m. on Thursdays. The first service will be outdoors between Heterick Library and the chapel with retiring Chaplain Vern LaSala speaking on "Make Room for God."

Career and Graduate Fair, Sept. 8
ONU’s Fall Career and Graduate School Fair will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m., Sept. 8, in the Field House. Organized by the Office of Career Services, the event will allow students to explore career and graduate school options. In addition, faculty members are invited to network with recruiters to learn more about job and internship opportunities either before or after the fair or at the recruiters’ lunch. HeathWise Newsletter available

The August issue of ONU’s HealthWise newsletter is now available online with features on glucosamine and chondroitin, herbal supplements and topical products.

HealthWise Wellness Classes
Free fitness classes are offered for ONU employees, beg inning the week of Aug. 29. Classes include total body strength, yoga and Zumba. Full details are available online or contact Assistant Professor Sara Terrell at ext. 3137 or at s-terrell@onu.edu

Learn to swim
Children from ages 4 through 12 are invited to take part in five-week swim lessons offered by the ONU swimming and diving student athletes. Two sessions will be offered, one at 5:30 p.m. and one at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, 18, 25 and Oct. 2 and 16. To learn more, contact Coach Petty Ewald  at p-ewald@onu.edu Registration is due by Sept. 4.
