Board of Trustees chairman Bob Smith, BSBA '75, was recently named one of northeast Ohio's "difference makers" in Crain's Cleveland Business.



Northern to recognize Saudi Arabian prison management officials  

Thirty administrative officers from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia who have completed the two-year Prison Management Certificate Program will be recognized on Sunday, May 22, at 8:30 a.m. in Presser Hall. Following the official ceremony, a brunch will be served in the Pettit College of Law’s Hanson Reading Room at 10:30 a.m.

Sherrod Brown to speak at undergraduate commencement
ONU will celebrate its 2011 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony in the Sport Center on Sunday, May 22, 2011, at 2 p.m. Approximately 600 students will be awarded degrees.

Articulation agreement signed with Rhodes State College
Ohio Northern has established an articulation agreement with Rhodes State College in Lima, Ohio, to manage transfer policies, enhance advising, and simplify the transfer of courses or credits between the programs.

Sakae Institute set for July

The Sakae Institute of Study Abroad, a preparation program for Japanese and Chinese students who will begin studies at U.S. high school, colleges and universities in the fall, will be on campus from July 7 through Aug. 10.

Learning about loons
Dr. Jay Mager, assistant professor of biological sciences, is co-author of “Marking Loons, Making Progress,” a cover story in the current issue of American Scientist. Along with Dr. Charles Walcott, professor emeritus of neurobiology and behavior at Cornell University and Dr. Dr. Walter Piper, professor of earth and environmental sciences at Chapman University, Mager reports on striking discoveries about the social behavior and communication of common loons revealed by a low-tech approach - individual marking of study animals.

Professor published in Macromolecules

An article by Amelia Anderson-Wile, Ohio Northern University assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was recently published in the Macromolecules journal.

Ken Colwell pictures Lincoln Memorial from new angle
In the June issue of Popular Photography, the two-page "How You Can Do It" Ken Colwell, associate director of web design, presents a fresh perspective on the iconic Lincoln Memorial. In the article he talked about the frustration of cliche photos and hoards of tourists. "In a moment of frustration, I stepped outside to find this beautiful blue sky, these brilliant white columns, and a photo I like," Colwell said. See the image.

Dr. Iseman tribute online
As Dr. Steve Iseman, professor of communication arts, completes his career at ONU, a YouTube video is celebrating his accomplishments. The video by Jose Soto, a junior in broadcasting and electronic media from Columbus Grove, Ohio, was a class project and was shown at the Communication Arts banquet.

Student leadership awards presented
The annual President’s Leadership Dessert was held May 11 to honor student leaders.

Melissa Straub receives the Catherine Freed Leadership Award
Melissa M. Straub, a senior in biology and pre-medicine with a minor in public health from Canfield, Ohio, has been awarded the 2011 Catherine Freed Leadership Award at Ohio Northern University.


Student receives Presser Scholar Award

Ohio Northern University student Mark W. Blowers, a junior music education major from Toledo, Ohio, was awarded the Presser Scholar Award at ONU Honors Day on May 7. The award includes a $4,800 grant.

Pharmacy alumna and student receive OSHP awards
A pharmacy alumna and an ONU pharmacy student received awards during the 133rd annual Ohio Pharmacist Association (OPA) Conference held April 8-10 in Columbus, Ohio. Bethany Murphy, a pharmacy practice resident from Fayetteville, Tenn., received the Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacists (OSHP) Resident of the Year Award. Ashley Overy, a fifth-year pharmacy student from Grafton, Ohio, was awarded the Scholarship for Non-Graduating PharmD Students.

Department of Mathematics and Statistic hosts Math Awareness Day
The ONU Math Department recently hosted the Tenth Annual High School Math Awareness Day. The full day of events included math seminars, conducted by ONU professors and math majors, and a symposium on “Careers in Math” hosted by the ONU Math Department. 

Textbook rentals come to campus bookstore
This fall, ONU will become part of a select group of colleges/universities offering students a textbook rental program. This opportunity is made possible thanks to a partnership forged between Ohio Northern University administration and the campus bookstore, managed by Barnes & Noble. With textbook rentals, students can realize tremendous savings, paying less than half of what they would to purchase a new, printed textbook.
