Engineering student receives SMART scholarship

Ohio Northern University student Brooke Hayden, a sophomore electrical engineering major from New Carlisle, Ohio, has received a scholarship through the Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program.

The SMART Scholarship for Service Program was created by the U.S. Department of Defense to support undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated the ability to excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) disciplines. The goal of the program is to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at the department’s laboratories.

Recipients of the SMART scholarship are provided with summer internships and access to world-class facilities. In addition, SMART scholars receive a cash award between $25,000 and $41,000 per year depending on prior education, tuition costs, educational expenses, and textbook and health insurance allowances, as well as the opportunity to continue their research within civil service roles upon graduation.

“This is a huge honor,” Hayden said. “I am excited and honored to have been chosen. I can’t wait for my orientation this summer and the internship with my Wright-Patterson Air Force Base next summer.”

At Ohio Northern, Hayden plays women’s basketball and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta. She also is the webmaster for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a tour guide for the ONU engineering department, and a teacher’s assistant in the electrical & computer engineering and computer science department’s computer lab.
