Musical theatre students to perform in Mexico

Six Ohio Northern University musical theatre students will travel to Mexico to perform with five singers from San Luis Potosi, along with the Julian Carillo Orchestra and the San Luis Camerata, from Monday, Feb. 28, to Monday, March 7.

The concert, “The American Musical Theatre Songbook,” will be held on Saturday, March 5, at 8 p.m. at the Teatro de la Paz. The students will be led by Lloyd Butler, co-director of the ONU musical theatre program, director of the Freed Center Orchestra and resident artist.

“The American Musical Theatre Songbook” features famous melodies from the Broadway stage in concert format backed by a full symphony orchestra and 11 singers. The singers, who will sing in English and Spanish, include Cassie Rea, a senior communication arts major from Westerville, Ohio, Shane Patrick Duffy, a junior communication arts major from Cincinnati, Ohio, Layne Schneider, a sophomore communication arts major from Dayton, Ohio, Caitlin Hamm, a sophomore communication arts major from Northfield, Ohio, Derek Brookens, a sophomore communication arts major from Port Allegany, Ohio, and Robert Lynn, a sophomore communication arts major from Oregon, Ohio.

While Butler will serve as the guest conductor for the program, Kirsten Osbun Manley, ONU lecturer in music and musical theatre and resident artist in music, will serve as the vocal coach.

The group will rehearse with the orchestra and singers from Tuesday, March 1, until Saturday, March 5.

The concert is partially sponsored by the Secretary of Culture office of the San Luis Potosi government.
