Freed Center presents Band-o-Rama
Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents Band-o-Rama on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 4 p.m.
The 2010 edition of the “Star of Northwest Ohio” will swing to such classic acts as the famous “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” a 1934 jazz number by Edgar Sampson about the Savoy Ballroom in New York City’s Harlem. The club existed from 1926 to 1958 and was one of the few venues where white and black patrons were able to dance together. The Savoy Ballroom was also where the “battle of jazz” took place between the Benny Goodman Orchestra and Chick Webb.
Band-o-Rama also will feature traditional jazz masters such as Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Chick Webb, Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington.
Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors and non-ONU students, $9 for children, and $5 for ONU students. The Freed Center box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phone orders are accepted with American Express, MasterCard, VISA or Discover by calling 419-772-1900. Tickets also are available online at www.onu.edu/freed
